# Former influential White Supremacist: Trump's comments are hugely important

The Daily is a NYTimes podcast. In this one, host Michael Barbaro interviews Derek Black, son of the founder of the Stormfront website, nephew (I think) of David Duke. Derek left the white supremacy movement a few years ago after talking with friends he made in college. But he was raised in the inner workings and inner circles of it.

The most chilling thing was how he responded to the question about how Trump’s comments on Charlottesville - especially the Tuesday comments at Trump Tower - were received. Derek Black said, with a note of emotion in his voice, that outsiders would have no idea how big this would be inside the movement. And he explains why in very plainspoken terms - acceptance from potus is legitimizing in deeply felt ways.

He wrote an article in the Week in Review section of the Sunday NYT, too. His last name is, shall we say… ironic?
