The game F1 2022 was on sale over Christmas, so I bought it on Steam. Returned it promptly when I realized that I didn’t want to drive a sim-y game at the time. Well it’s on GamePass now. I’ve decided that before each race, I’m going to learn the track by playing it in F1 '22. Spent about 2 hours today doing hot laps around Canada, to the point where I can roughly draw the track from memory. I’m still having trouble remembering corner #s, but I have the rest of the week to practice. And I was actually able, after about a half-dozen attempts, to finish a 5-lap race with the car mostly intact. I think this will make the races more interesting to watch. ---

I’m heading to Montreal this weekend to watch my first F1 race (live or otherwise) as a newcomer to the sport, what should I know to make it more interesting for me? ---

The draw of Canada is (1) barriers set close to a relatively high speed track, so lots of chances to see drivers coming close to them, and (2) a relatively long high speed section from the hairpin to the wall of champions chicane to turn 1. ---

It was a ton of fun. The cars were not as loud as I thought they would be so I was able to download the F1 app and listen to the commentary on my earbuds while watching the race which really added to the experience. My seats were right at the apex of the hairpin corner, so we could see a far bit of track without turning our heads too much as the cars came toward us, hammered on the breaks, then drove away. I’d certainly go again. Also, Montreal was super busy and a fun place to visit. A real departure from what I an used to (Saskatchewan). ---

Timing and Scoring will be interesting this weekend, as usual. I’ve got some ideas about ‘Track Limits’ but they aren’t very popular. Let’s just say they don’t have this problem in Monaco. Well, the problem sorts it self out pretty quick. In all seriousness, I bet the drivers can’t see those stinking lines at all. They are pants-seating it around a couple of those turns. Gosh, if only there were a way to get a Driver’s perspective, like an on-board view. But how would that be accomplished??? If only there were somebody telling me how to do that three or five times during every practice, qualy and maybe 10 times on race day. I guess we’ll never know… \<— Best sarcasm I can muster in this heat. ---

I find it comical the way some tracks have added extra pavement at the exit of some corners, and once the drivers get accustomed to using it all the time, some more pavement is added to give them even more room on the exit. The thing is, I don’t think it’s any better to have walls right at the edge of the track. One inch too far shouldn’t knock a car out of race.
