If you go to that thread, you will find citations that Fox lies 49% of the time, which is seven times _more_ than CNN ‘lies’.

I used to be a long time watcher of Fox News and I am currently a watcher of MSNBC. I wouldn’t venture a guess on which is more biased but they both run similar models.

I used to watch Fox to try and see what the loyal opposition was thinking but it’s not really that. It’s telling us what it thinks that my side is thinking so it’s super easy to see the bias since it is distorting views I often hold.

I started to watch MSNBC because I find it more entertaining and because I thought it would be nice to see what the thinkers on my side are thinking but it’s not really that. It’s telling me what it thinks the opposition is thinking so it’s a lot harder to see the bias since it is distorting views I don’t often hold.

That not only makes it really hard to impartially judge which is more biased it makes it really hard to care about the question. If you want unbiased then these aren’t the networks for you. If you enjoy seeing just how stupid the other guy is pick your ideological poison. If it’s entertainment you want, pick the most entertaining flavor of the day.

> I’m sure Fox News has a much more dedicated fan-base than Dish Network, like it or not.

Your second point is absolutely correct. Fox News viewers are way more loyal to FN than Dish viewers are to their satellite. Add to that the fact that people generally (and for pretty good reasons) hate media delivery companies and you’re on to something.

HOWEVER, one of the reason people hate these companies is that once you subscribe they are very good at making it such a hassle to change that most people don’t bother. You can’t switch cable companies, and changing satellite services means scheduling service calls, installing and uninstalling dishes, switching out boxes, learning new remotes, etc. None of these are a big hassle, but even a minimal effort on the part of the consumer to deal with the most passive activity in our lives (OK, maybe sleeping, but it’s close) means that fewer will cancel.

Also, while Fox dominates cable news ratings, that’s kind of like being the tallest dwarf – kicking Fox News off of Dish Network affects WAY fewer people than kicking off CBS (or the Fox broadcast network for that matter). Whatever number of Fox News viewers there are on Dish, they are outnumbered by viewers of Family Guy.

According to some this is bullshit because it doesn’t come with a cite. Despite the fact much of both outlets produce opinion pieces rather than factual pieces, and that both sides have bias through their respective silences on some issues and their concentration on other issues. Some believe all this can be easily studied and analyzed to produce easily comparable figures on lying and accuracy(despite the fact that each study will depend upon who is doing the studying).

I take a more old fashioned point of view. The political class is made up of roughly equally dubious individuals on both sides; the political journalistic class is made up of equally dubious figures on both sides. Both sides will then produce roughly an equal degree of dubious reporting, dubious editing and dubious output.

I have my own political opinions. Yet I dont believe for a second that “my side” are not also full of political hucksters, shysters and charlatans.

No.

As pointed out in the other thread (with citations) ‘Both sides are equally bad’ is a false argument.

To be fair to me I did say they would produce “roughly” the same amount of bad output. I did not say both sides were equally as bad. Personally, I think the Left have more outlets for their lies, untruths and biases. Right wing nutters generally have fewer journalistic outlets to shout from. This will make Right wing journalists more concentrated in fewer media outlets. This may lead to the output seen on Fox News.

DISH had the same problem with CNN and related channels about a month or so ago. Direct TV has similar problems from time to time. This has nothing to do with politics and everything to do with economics.

I suspect the op did not make a similar rather gloating thread about the problem CNN had with Dish. Im assuming liberal editorial bias on _his_ part.

Again, this discussion is better suited to the other thread. But if you check the link I posted there, you can see that ‘lies and untruths’ happen 49% of the time on Fox, and 7% of the time on CNN. That’s hardly ‘“roughly” the same amount of bad output’.

I don’t get the US version of CNN only the European version. A vast amount of the CNN output I have watched have been of opinion pieces etc. Relatively few facts to actually judge their accuracy on. As I said earlier, much of the output bias of these organizations are bias of ommission; bias of what they highlight; bias of sources and bias of language. Its very difficult to qauntify such bias. Though I can believe that CNN are less culpable in outright bias than Fox. The nearer equivalent to Fox on the Left will be MSNBC.

So, instead of quantifying such bias(which is in itself susceptible to bias) I trust my own judgement on human nature. That human beings and power structures are roughly the same on both Left and Right. They both play the same political games, and are both stretching the truth inmuch of what they tell us. One side may be correct in any given argument, but this does not mean the correct side are not also capable of lying to us in order to win an argument, win a debate, or to win a political election.

Yep. And that was less than three months ago. I don’t like Fox News, but I think the visceral hatred some have over the fact that a “news” outlet is mostly anger-stoking propaganda (a feature of various “news” outlets since the invention of the printing press) is ridiculous. Then you add in the fact that the O.P.'s anger is such that he got his facts about who pays the fees 100% completely wrong and the irony is hilarious.

Except that this is blatantly false. Blatantly. Who on the democrat side is quite as ignorant of science as, say, Darrel Issa? And is that person being put in a position of power when it comes to science and environmental policy? What stunt has the democratic party pulled recently that came close to the debt ceiling standoffs? Or the government shutdown? Or hell, even the 50+ votes to repeal Obamacare (one or two “symbolic” votes is one thing; 50+ is fucking ludicrous)? This idea of “both sides do it” is false. Are there scumbags on both sides of the aisle? Sure. But don’t even for a second pretend that they’re somehow equivalent. They aren’t.

I suspect quite a number of Democrats are as ignorant of science as Darrel Issa(who, from the little I have witnessed of him is very underwhelming). Science opinion of today has changed its “settled opinion” on many issues that it had an opposing opinion on just a few decades ago. Trusting science outright can be almost as alarming as being ignorant of science. At least with the scientifically ignorant settled opinion and settled policy does not change with each passing scientific fad.

What stunt has the Democratic Party pulled? I think I can point to a number of recebaiting speeches and announcements from Democrats to suggest they are just as capable of playing such games. In fact on many social issue its my opinion that Democrats need disharmony just as much as old fashioned white conservatives and supremacists did. Yes, both sides are full to the brim with opportunists. I could also point to older instances of grandstanding such as the Bork hearings.

Sorry, but this is so typical. To prove “equivalence”, right wingers either equate something said by someone with zero power, e.g. Al Sharpton, to what very powerful Republican leaders in the House or Senate say **and write into bills** , or they go back to a 30-year old example of “grandstanding” and equate that with shutting down the fucking government.

Just amazing.
