> Since we have branched out from movies to comics, I think I can safely mention the 1921 novel _She and Allan_, by H. Rider Haggard, which tied together the Allan Quatermain series and the Ayesha series.

Well, that’s an artist doing a crossover with his own works, which is a lot more common than crossovers with the works of others. Robert E, Howard did it (_Kings of the Night_ and Edgar Rice Burroughs did it (_Tarzan at the Earth’s core_) and so did others. H. Rider Haggard beats these.
But, in the spirit of SDMB one-upmanship, I have to point out that it’s not the first. _She and Allan_ dates from 1921, but Jules Verne had multiple crossovers in his books in the 19th century – Captain Nemo from _20,000 Leagues_ shows up in _The Mysterious Island_ (1874), as does someone from _In Search of the Castaways/The Children of Captain Grant_. And in 1882 his stage play _Journey through the Impossible_ brings together characters from several of his books, including Captain Nemo.
