Valerie - Ouch! That sounds painful. Mine are never painful, just really freaky. I can feel the teeth coming apart and crumbling into a chalky mush, like sand, only bigger pieces. Strangely, I have no recollection of the dreams past this point.

Mine are just like that too - tiny, mushy pebbles in my mouth and no pain. In my dreams, I can sometimes generate them by running my tongue over my disintegrating teeth. (Of course, then I can’t stop myself from doing this.) Sometimes I seem to get more pebbles than original teeth. Very disturbing with an unsettling feeling that lasts about an hour after I wake up.

Maybe my teeth are telling me to go see a dentist.

I have a recurring fear and nightmare of my teeth being methodically broken and pulled using large nail clippers…grosses me out.

I had a similar dream and posted about it a while back. Check [this thread](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=36218) for some relevant info.

The day I had dental surgery, I had a dream that night that my older sister came into my bedroom, shot me in the back of the neck with a rifle, and my teeth flew out.

I am always having violent dreams that I’m lying on my floormat and something terrible happens to me.

Wow! I’m not alone!!

Mine sound like Demo’s dreams - my teeth just painlessly crumble and become like pebbles. Sometimes I get a mouth full of crushed broken teeth and I have to keep spitting them out. I wake up freaked out and have to check my teeth.

I don’t buy the explanation that I read that said it’s caused by guilt over lies that are hurting someone - I don’t have outstanding lies to feel guilty about. I’m also surprised that vanity is mentioned, because I’m not terribly fussy about my looks. Furthermore, I’m not a mother, so I can’t understand the maternal guilt explanation, and as for the sex thing… I find it hard to believe. So that leaves - nothing! I’ve always figured it’s because I feel guilty over not going to the dentist more often, but I’m so phobic of dentists now that I’m not prepared to go unless I’m in pain. Still, I would expect to have something set off the dentist guilt, but I don’t always dream about my teeth when I have been thinking of dentists, and I haven’t always been thinking about dentists when I do get the dreams.

The grinding teeth thing is possible. When I was about 16 my dentist said “Hmmm… a bit of wear there… do you grind your teeth in your sleep?” and I said “How the hell would I know?”. Seems like a stupid question if you ask me!

Oh, man. The teeth-falling-out dream.

I hate that one. I get it when I’m stressed. I notice a loose tooth, then I’m tasting blood, then suddenly I’m spitting them out one by one. When I wake up I don’t know whether to be horrified or to cry inconsolably.

In my dream, the dentist says

“The teeth are fine, but the gums will have to come out…”

Thank goodness I’m not the only one with this weird thing going on.

I have had many different variations of this dream. The worst was the one where I was about to walk down the aisle at my wedding and all my teeth fell out in the back of the church. I started looking for them with blood pouring down the front of my wedding dress.
OR,
The one where they were loose so I started pulling them out myself and large chunks of my palate and jaw were coming with them, and it didin’t hurt as my whole face was caving in.
BLECK!

A friend of mine has a dream analysis book, and in it it says that tooth loss dreams mean worries are passing.
I don’t know about that. Those dreams make me pretty worried about why I’m having the damn dream!

Damn, Homer, it’s like pulling teeth to get you to open up about yourself.😛

Oh, I’ve had many variations of this dream usually as a result of one or more of the following:

1. when I’ve forgotten to floss or if I’ve eaten something that makes my gums sore

2. general stress

I’ve never had blood in my tooth-fall-out dreams. But I have had them all become loose like a row of dominoes falling over.

And in these dreams I always, ALWAYS end up spitting teeth out, one at a time in amounts that far exceed the number of teeth the any human could possibly have.

I call these “Chicklet Dreams”.

(In the dreams, my teeth are usually bigger, whiter and more square than in real life.)
