**George Henry Thomas** (July 31, 1816 – March 28, 1870) was an American [general](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General) in the [Union Army](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_Army) during the [American Civil War](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Civil_War) and one of the principal commanders in the [Western Theater](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_Theater_of_the_American_Civil_War). Thomas served in the [Mexican–American War](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexican%E2%80%93American_War) and later chose to remain with the [U.S. Army](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Army) for the Civil War as a [Southern Unionist](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Unionist), despite his heritage as a [Virginian](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virginia) (whose home state would join the [Confederate States of America](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confederate_States_of_America)). He won one of the first Union victories in the war, at [Mill Springs](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Mill_Springs) in [Kentucky](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kentucky), and served in important subordinate commands at [Perryville](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Perryville) and [Stones River](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Stones_River). His stout defense at the [Battle of Chickamauga](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Chickamauga) in 1863 saved the Union Army from being completely routed, earning him his most famous nickname, “the Rock of Chickamauga.” He followed soon after with a dramatic breakthrough on [Missionary Ridge](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Missionary_Ridge) in the [Battle of Chattanooga](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chattanooga_Campaign). In the [Franklin–Nashville Campaign](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franklin%E2%80%93Nashville_Campaign) of 1864, he achieved one of the most decisive victories of the war, destroying the army of [Confederate General](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_officers_in_the_Confederate_States_Army) [John Bell Hood](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Bell_Hood), his former student at West Point, at the [Battle of Nashville](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Nashville). Thomas had a successful record in the Civil War, but he failed to achieve the historical acclaim of some of his contemporaries, such as [Ulysses S. Grant](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ulysses_S._Grant) and [William T. Sherman](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_T._Sherman). He developed a reputation as a slow, deliberate general who shunned self-promotion and who turned down advancements in position when he did not think they were justified.
