Free stuff

Then there was the guy who tore out all his shrubs, replacing them with old copiers and printers. He didn’t really understand what xeroscaping is all about.

I think you’ve confused it with zeroscaping- taking everything out and not replacing it.

I picked up a nice IKEA Poang chair this week - I’ll be painting the frame something bright to offset the black covering.

Wow Johnny L.A.! Will you come help me next?

I just sold my home this spring and I was able to part with a lot of clutter. However, I still need to part with a lot more as my goal is to find a small townhome or condo. You are welcome to help. (I am currently in a furnished rental unit and will start looking for a place in July. My stuff is in a very large storage locker.)

I didn’t know those were still being made; thought they went out with the Age of Aquarius.

Have you seen what they’re going for in stores? I saw one for $225.

It’s this clock - I’ve decided to paint every other spine canary yellow.

This here clock.

If you scroll down to the thumbnails (?) just beneath the clock pic and mouse-jump back and forth real fast, you’ll…uh, probably get a headache. Looks cool, though.

Did you see how much that costs? And marked down 48%, to boot.

Nobody seemed to want my 2002 Winter Olympics U.S. Team Roots cap, so I took it back. Maybe I’ll wear it. Or maybe I’ll sell it on eBay.

EDIT: Or not. There’s one on eBay for 99¢, and others are under $20.

^ Patience, JLA, the future owner may not have come by today, maybe tomorrow. I had a Roland volume pedal for years but it was still in great shape. Didn’t need it any more, so tried to sell it on CL and at yard sales we had at various locations we lived. Took about five, maybe six years, but it finally sold–via CL ad–to a very nice older gentleman who was learning the pedal steel guitar and didn’t want to spend loads of $$ on a new pedal until he was sure he wanted to really pursue it. We yakked for a half hour, and he was ecstatic to have it. It was a cool experience. I’ve had many good transactions thru CL and only one or two bad ones (knock wood).

So, Ha Ha to the smart-ass at one of our yard sales who said I’d never sell that pedal for what I was asking. Professional musician type.

Not long after I moved into my apartment in 2012, I found a bunch of women’s clothes in the laundry room’s trash can. I liberated them; they were not my size, nor were they in styles that I would wear, but I did wash them and then took them to a consignment shop, and most of them sold! That was a pleasant surprise.

Another time, I bought a large Rubbermaid tote full of children’s books for $5, and put quite a few of them in said laundry room with a “FREE” sign on them. Those didn’t last very long, either. My friend who lives in a building across the street had a neighbor who did the same thing with her kids’ outgrown clothes.

Hope it didn’t also damage your dryer.

It was sprinkling a little bit, so I went down to the Free Corner with some plastic wrap and duct tape. I taped some plastic wrap to the top of the cardboard box that contains what’s left of the books. (I’m rather surprised nearly all of the books have been taken. Maybe I just have good taste.) I pulled back A World of Ideas: Essential Readings for College Writers Second Edition (1986), which I’ve had since a class I took in the '80s (Poli Sci? Can’t remember.) Given today’s political climate, I should re-read the essays contained within it.

It’s a complete mystery to me what people will want and what they won’t. I’ve reached a point where I just throw it all against the wall and see what sticks.

Someone took most of the scrap 2 x 6 lengths I used to lay out the platform. So any more free stuff will have to go onto the grass once again.

Also, the open side of the box of books (Only a few left!) was facing upward at a 45º angle. Kind of makes the plastic on the top side useless. I put it back so the open side is facing forward and the plastic-covered side is on top.

The clock is painted!

I did end up going with a bright yellow to offset the brushed aluminum - I think it turned out really well.

Hanging on my soft grey living room wall.

Wow, that is beautiful.

Indeed.
