So you’re bashing her because you have basically the same viewpoint… that the signs should be allowed. Jackass. Also, kelli lives in Canada. Nice ethnocentrism.

You have a commanding grasp of the obvious. That still puts you ahead of some of the assholes we get here.

She said that that was disgusting, not that that was why all women have abortions. You seem to be projecting conflicts with other people on to kelli here. And I HAVE heard of such occurring; abortions can be had in free clinics in many places.

This has nothing to do with posters, dipshit. Reread it without the chip on your shoulder. _Women should not be made to feel like a monster if they need an abortion, but should not make the decision lightly._ Kelli is **prochoice.**

The fraction of pregnancies caused by rape is not nearly so large as the fraction of cancers caused by something out of the victim’s control. Also kelli’s mom has cancer so I’m sure this is a sore point with her.

You’re an asshole picking a fight for no reason.

are you under the impression that if your standing by the road with a sign causes someone to be killed, you would not be held responsible because of your 1st ammendment rights? who is being the idiot here?

and why do i care about children… hmmm… maybe because i have two with a third on the way? is that a good reason? btw, i was under the impression that pld was remarking on the irony of pro-choicers sudden concern for the children. while i really don’t think being pro-choice makes a person anti-children, the remark didn’t really apply to me anyway, seeing as how i am pro-life. try reading with your eyes open.

i actually know a woman who does that exact thing. she’s had three abortions so far and absolutely refuses to practice safe sex. while i generally try _not_ to judge women who have made the decision to have an abortion (i’m sure what they really need is support, not a lecture), i can’t help but have exactly zero respect for this woman.

Let’s just have a great big convoy of trucks with shocking, graphic/potentially or patently offensive images following around the abortion trucks:

Some trucks with pictures of aborted fetuses, to show what an evil thing it is
Some trucks with images of child pornography, to show what an evil thing it is
Some trucks with images of emaciated concentration camp victims, to show everyone how horrible ethnic cleansing is
Some trucks with depictions of anal sex between homosexual men, to show how evil homosexuality is
Some trucks with images of people who got oral cancer from chewing tobacco and needed about 1/3 of their head to be surgically removed
Some trucks with images of small children who were shot in the head, to show the need for gun control
Some trucks with images from a slaughterhouse, to get across the PETA/vegan message
Some trucks with naked images of centerfolds, for eye candy
Some trucks with images of people who were killed or horribly disfigured in auto accidents due to distracted driving

Try explaining all that to your kids.

How about a cite for this? Has there been a case _ever_ where someone was held legally liable for holding a sign that caused a traffic accident?

No, I never said that the I agree with the signs, I find them tasteless. Could you not understand the sarcasm when I said “Ain’t this country great?” or did you automatically that I’m some redneck living in Tennesse who secretly despises all foreigners? Further on that note, if you didn’t notice, the trucks and the posters are in Florida, which(last time I checked) are still inside the U.S. Hence they’re protected by the first amendment.

She might not have intended it to relate to the trucks, but I see it that way. The trucks are projecting the image to think that abortion is disgusting and vile, and in effect, projecting that effect on women who recieve abortions.

That may be, but notice how Kelli states:

> [@](#):
>
> PLEASE do not compare getting cancer treatment to getting an abortion. Pregnancy is 100 percent preventable with abstinance.

I never said that there are more rapes than cancer cases, I was saying that she’s incorrect for making such broad claims like that.

Not much to add as Yue Han has so gallantly defended me already.

_BUT_: Rape is, of course, its own seperate issue, as is incest. Sure there is probably a 13 year old girl out there pregnant by her father, but anti-abortion protesters are not aiming at her are they? When I said abstinence prevents pregnancy, I **of course** didnt mean rape. Surely you were just looking for a tiny inconsistency to hold onto, not actually that dense.

> [@](#):
>
> I have never heard of any woman who sleep in bed with anyone they want, and figure that instead of a condom/the pill, they’ll utilize highly expensive abortion techniques.

even though this was poorly stated, I think you meant you have never heard of a woman using abortion as a means of birth control.

_I wish I lived on your planet._

And FTR I am neither pro choice or pro life.

I beleive that an embryo is a human being, with unlimited potential, BUT I beleive that circumstances can occur that make it impossible for a woman to continue the pregnancy.

As a parent, a woman, a human being, I am certain for the women who make the decision to terminate a pregnancy, it is a terrible heart breaking choice. But it has to be their choice. **I DO NOT APPROVE OF BULLYING THEM!**

Trucks with pictures are stupid, pointless. You cant shame or scare or disgust people into thinking : “hey! I should HAVE this baby!”. The only people they reach are ALREADY decided!

I am PRO education, abstinence, protection, responsibliity.

I think its sad that people who really want the same end( no unwanted pregnancies) can be so far apart.

Actually, they are aiming at her. They are aiming at every woman that would choose to have an abortion. That includes the woman who uses abortion as a form of birth control and it also includes the 13 year old girl who was molested by her father.

Maybe we should see some pictures of a two year old child who was boiled alive by a parent. Or the 3 year old I knew who was forced to drink ammonia & cyanide by his father. Or a crotch shot of a 4 year old girl who was raped by a relative.

Compared to things like these, dead fetuses don’t look so bad.

are you serious? Cite? Which one do you need a cite on? “If you do something that causes someone else to be killed, you get in trouble.” Is that what you need a cite on?

How about “fire in a theatre law.” Need a cite on that? Here’s a **site** for you,
The University of Kansas
School of Law
1535 W 15th Street
Lawrence, KS 66045

Come on down, I’ll show you the around the library. You can have your choice of books on five different levels where you may actually learn something about that wonderous document called The Constitution.
Not everything is right there on the internet waiting for a linkity link link. Sometimes you’ve got to crack open a book and read. Some of the time you don’t though, because both of those things you may or may not have needed a cite on are pretty much common sense.

Oh, and BTW, **kellibelli** , I think you were misunderstanding the point of some of the previous posters. They weren’t comparing cancer cells and abortions based on what level of choice you have in the matter. They were just saying that both are, to many people, gross things to see.

DavisMcDavis says-

"It would be nice if that Reverand Wildmon - the one who pickets AIDS funerals and is “opposed to homosexuality” "

Rev. Don Wildmon, founder of the American Family Association, does, like most politically conservative Christians, oppose homosexuality. He does not picket AIDS
funerals- that is Rev Fred Phelps of the God Hates Fags group. Rev. Wildmon is more conservative that I but he’s not nearly as rabid as Phelps (who, believe it or not, was a racial civil rights lawyer back in the 1960’s).

Btw, I’m 95% Pro-Life, Christian & Right/liberatarian
and while there is a time & place for graphic abortion
photos, I don’t think BIG PUBLIC DISPLAYS are appropriate
at all & I have no problem with some legal prohibition of such.

In about thirty seconds, I found a linkity link link on the Internet referring to the specific Supreme Court case in question. Notice that I say a Supreme Court case, not the Constitution, because as far as I know, there is nothing in the Constitution about yelling fire in a crowded theater. What is commonly referred to as the “fire in a theater” law is in fact the Supreme Court Case Schenk v. United States, 249 U.S. 47. (This case is also often referred to as the “clear and present danger” case.) While this is indeed an _interpretation_ of the Constitution, it is not, in fact, the Constitution.

Relevant quote from the majority opinion, given by Justice Holmes: “The most stringent protection of free speech would not protect a man in falsely shouting fire in a theatre and causing a panic. It does not even protect a man from an injunction against uttering words that may have all the effect of force.”

thanks **MsWhatsit**. To be honest, I lied. Everything you could ever want to know about the constitution, laws, rulings and cases can be found on the Internet. Westlaw and Nexis both provide search services but they do so at a price. The library, however, is free of charge and will contain more info than Oyez will. Not that Oyez isn’t a great site but it doesn’t have the resources to be all encompassing.
I wasn’t sure if **milroyj** was asking about the fire in the theatre thing when he asked for a cite.

The point, to bring it back to the topic at hand, is that you do NOT have free reign on what you can say. You can’t run a banner across the interstate saying “no abortions!” when that banner can hit cars and cause an accident. Your freedom of speech isn’t a blip on the radar compared to others’ freedom of life. This doesn’t need a court ruling, or a cite, it’s just plain common sense.
But if **milroyj** doesn’t understand that, then he merely needs to set up a time for that library tour and I’ll gladly oblige.

Apology? For what?

First of all, I don’t buy the “I’m a victim” stuff. There is only one true victim when an abortion occurs, and that person doesn’t have the luxury to post on the SDMB.

Here are the facts:

1. She chose to have unprotected sex. (She’s certainly not alone; millions choose to do this.) Since there’s basically no difference between _having unprotected sex_ and _wanting to get pregnant_, her decision was extremely irresponsible, to say the least.
2. She got pregnant. Big surprise.
3. She realized that having a baby would disruptive to her life and would be a “major inconvenience.”
4. She killed the unborn baby.
5. Problem “solved.” (Note: As time will prove, it didn’t really “solve” anything. It merely traded one problem for a worse one…)

I don’t feel sorry for her in the least bit. Instead, I feel sorry for the (now dead) baby who will never enjoy the Blessing of Life.

BLESSING OF LIFE???

Well, maybe it is, _for some_! But many terminated pregnancies would turn out to be unwanted abused neglected crack addicted… etc etc etc…
hiya Ender! You might be right, but I have on other occasions seen people compare cancer and an unwanted pregnancy in that they are both unwanted curses feeding on them, and if they have the right to kill cancer, blah blah blah. I will concende I might have jumped to thta conclusion when all they were doing was saying they wouldnt want to see other medical procedures.

No, I was (and still am) waiting for a cite showing that A) a sign/billboard/protest ever caused an accident, and B) that a US court of law held the sign holder either criminally or civilly responsible.

C’mon now, this is a big country, been around for 225 years, please find me one cite where A & B have happened.

Well, you didn’t have to be so reasonable about it. 🙂
