YAY! teen Canadian compatriot Victoria (good name!) Mboko wins her first match in the Majors, beating last year’s Wimbledon quarter-finalist. A good way to start your first season on tour. Even in the quali’s she won all three of her matches in straight sets. Run with it, girl! So, does Novak still have it in him for another title? Or is it all Carlos now? ---

I’m watching John McEnroe do his Ugly American act. He seems to be genuinely bewildered that Parisians are all hopped up about a little thing called the Champions League Final in which their team is playing. 40 years ago when I was a teenager playing tennis on the other side of the world, he was an example of what I did not want to be as a person. He’s been annoying me ever since. Sorry for the venting. ---

On the Women’s side of the draw, 14 out of the top 20 players have made it into the round of 16. It’s perfectly possible that the quarters will feature numbers 1-8, but man are there some tasty R16 matches on offer. Predicting Rublev will beat Sinner. Sure, the latter has twice as many wins over the former, but I think Rublev’s attacking game should prevail this time. ---

Is Wawrinka pretty much done, then? I saw he got in on a WC and went out in round 1. He’s had a great career, overshadowed by the big 3 or 4 guys. Three grand slams is a pretty big achievement in any career, along with a Gold Medal(doubles) in the Olympics. ---
