Felicitations on Paris being selected to host the 2024 Jeux Olympiques, btw. Yes, there’s some ceremony to complete first, but it was either that or have the IOC do something nice for Trump. Now that Le Pen is out of the picture for now, there’s a safe choice to make. ---

It’s noteworthy that while polls were accurate in the complicated multi-candidate first round they significantly underestimated Macron’s vote in the two-candidate second round. A possible reason may be that the e-mail hacks backfired which should hopefully discourage future cyber miscreants. ---

This was a pretty decisive victory. I’d like to hope that this is strong evidence of a back lash against the rise of right wing populism. I think the rest of the world is seeing what a joke Trump’s presidency is, and the absolute debacle of the brexit process and realising that sometimes they do need to listen to “experts” and have people that actually understand how government works in power. ---

From the [relevant wikipedia page](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_presidential_election,_2017), we have the following map, which shows what _départements_ were a win for Macron vs. a win for LePen.
