Fridge question for kitchen remodel - is this a totally stupid idea?

Hee. Hasn’t it been good all these years? Haven’t I stood by your side providing chilled food and drink? Why do you want to go and change everything?

My father did this. It was a dual sided model too, had 2 doors on each side. One pair was in the kitchen, the other pair was on the dining room side of the wall. Plus it was 56 cubic feet, twice as big as a large refrigerator. The freezer for the house was an under counter model placed under the kitchen island, it was a PITA to access a lot of things in it.

Weird, first time in forever I get on the dope and someone’s asking about the same thing I was researching last night. Athena, we’re in a similar situation as you and I found this 4 door Samsung with 30.4 CuFt that has a convertible zone that can be used either for a freezer or an extension of the fridge. Hope this may be suitable for you. If we get it this week I’ll let you know how we like it.

Dear Athena and Mr. Athena,
Take a deep breath, and buy a big fridge. After a couple months, you’ll wonder how you got along without it.

By the way, most fridges have reversible doors. All the screw holes are already there. If you’d rather have it open from the right, as we did, ask the dealer if the installers can switch the hinges and handles. I switched 'em on the previous one myself, and I’m glad I had the installers do the job this time

What kind of selection is there for a fridge-only unit? I was searching for such a fridge about this time last year to put in the basement as a spare, as we already have a separate freezer in the basement, and there wasn’t much out there.

What there was, I found to be rather overpriced - presumably an artifact of less demand.

That said: depending on the kitchen layout, newer large fridges really can stick out - I think we’d have trouble with one in our kitchen due to the positioning of the island (just not enough room between that and the fridge/dishwasher/sink section).

Anyway - if you really think such an option would work, go for it! Selling isn’t in the works for you for a while, but when the time cimes: If the purchaser expects to keep the fridge, you might want to plan to leave the garage freezer, or offer an allowance for them to purchase one (a standalone freezer is cheaper than a full fridge+freezer).

I’ve always been baffled at the “take the fridge” mentality. Them’s is HEAVY - I sure as hell wouldn’t want to move one. I was actually surprised that so many people take their clotheswashers and dryers when they move - we sold our townhouse 13 years ago and planned on leaving the washer/dryer, but the new owner didn’t want them so we had to give them away (the place we bought had the machines included).

I think it’s a great option. And for what it’s worth, I’m with Mr. Athena. I hate it when the fridge sticks out.

I think the issue with the door clearance was for a French door fridge, and those can’t be switched. It was a deal-breaker for me when replacing my fridge, and I really like how they look so I was sad when I realized it wasn’t an option.

Crouching down everytime you want something out of a fridge, will get old fast. My advice, get the big fridge an find ways to make it look nice.

Huh? Fridge-only models come in full height. If it’s replacing a top-freezer model, you end up with less crouching.

There are some about the size of a four-slice toaster and sit on the counter. My dad has one.
