Here is a dilemma I face every day at the cafeteria grill. French fries or onion rings? You are being offered one or the other. Assume they are both top-quality products, prepared, cooked, and presented exactly the way you like them. They’re included in the price of your lunch, so price is not an issue. You can only choose one. Which do you choose? ---

Fries. Good onion rings are great, but I’ve found that I consistently like fries more than rings. So many rings are bleh. ---

I voted rings because of the ‘top quality’ qualifier. Most onion rings are out of a bag and taste like it, unfortunately, so I almost never order them. ---

For a single choice – probably onion rings, since they’re a rarity. For repeated choices – I’d probably get tired of onion rings before I got tired of french fries. ---

Onion rings are great in computer simulations, but out in the field, the whole onion part comes out like the guts of a crustacean when you bite its head off. A crustacean with insides hot enough to give your lower lip and chin 3rd degree burns. ---

Fries because nobody ever does rings right any more. They are all too big, too thick and the batter sucks. ---

Given the choice, I will almost always prefer onion rings to fries because most places that make onion rings take some pride in them\*. Most places that make fries just make fries. For values of “places that make onion rings” =/= “Burger King” ---

I love a good onion ring, and I prefer them over fries, but I wouldn’t eat them every day. ---

I’m a straight-up Onion Ring junkie. BUT … there are exceptions. I will not eat just any ol’ ring. They have to be battered thick and heavy and deep fried to within an inch of their lives. I like 'em crunchy and hot. It’s best when you take a bite and the whole onion comes slithering out leaving just the husk of batter left. I hate the flaky battered ones. Too dry; too difficult to eat. And don’t ever - fucking EVER - talk to me about Burger King onion rings. I don’t even know what those godforsaken things are. As near as I can figure they’re made out of wet toilet paper and Ex-lax. ---

Fries are OK, but they’re a dime a dozen, so to speak. Good, bad, or indifferent, they are everywhere, they exist to be dipped in ketchup and fill up stomaches. A well-made onion ring is a rarity, and if the cafeteria was selling top-of-the-line rings, there’s no question, gimme rings! ---

Rings all the way. I know a plenty of places to get good fries. I don’t know any that can make a truely good ring, it’s a lost art it seems. ---
