…Baconnaise.

Has anybody heard about this product yet? I’m starting to hear buzz about it on the radio, locally in Washington, but nothing firm yet about a product or a date other than “later this month.”

Not much info on the [website](http://www.baconnaise.com/). Although I can’t say I really have a lot of questions. It’s mayonnaise with added bacon flavouring. My arteries just cringed, but my taste buds just did a happy dance.

Just add bread, lettuce and tomato, and it sounds like lunch to me.

I might even dip my fries in it.

Well, as much as I really don’t care for the idea of baconaisse or bacon salt (the only thing I particularly enjoy tasting like bacon is, well, bacon. I tend to eat it separate from most other foods), I do see that they send free shipments of their stuff to US military units deployed overseas (they sponsor one unit each month), so I gotta say I like their company just for that.

I’ve always disregarded the bacon salt topics because I don’t really buy food online and of course, living in the middle of nowhere there’s no way it can be sold here…well, I just checked their store locator, and there’s a place that sells it like 3 blocks from work! Here I come, bacon salt!

I remember reading a review of a book (I think it was [Fat](http://www.amazon.com/Fat-Appreciation-Misunderstood-Ingredient-Recipes/dp/1580089356/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1223186879&sr=1-1)) which had a recipe for bacon-fat mayo.

I thought the Bacon Salt was interesting but after the first couple of weeks it just languished in the cupboard. I might try making some bacon fat mayo for BLTs and potato salads though.

Shouldn’t “Bacon Grease” be capitalized? It is, after all, food of the gods! 😉

Certainly its not a good idea to consume any of it unless one happens to be immortal, anyways.

I realize bacon salt is a big joke around here - and ha ha - but if I could get a serious answer to this that would be awesome: what exactly does one do with the stuff?

I’m not at all interested in bacon salt – I would even go so far as to say I’m actively opposed to it – but have to admit I am curious about baconnaise. More because I really like mayonnaise than the bacon component, though. If there were any stores nearby that sold it, I’d probably buy a small bottle, but it looks like this company mostly deals with Kroger, at least in my area, and I live in a Kroger-less pocket of Tennessee. I’ll just have to do without.

I suppose you sprinkle it on food that happens not to taste like bacon. I’d imagine this is best for bland foods that go well with salt, such as french fries or military field rations (from their website, that seems to be a popular application of their product).

Yep. Thanks for that. I found it [here.](http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/1580089356/ref=sib_dp_pt#)
The problem with mass producing the stuff is that bacon fat turns solid at refrigerator temps. It does sound worth trying for a very special occasion, like surviving your first coronary bypass.

I like it on tater tots and green beans. It’s pretty good on pizza. On eggs it gives you the sensation of having eaten bacon without all the calories.

Anyplace you might conceivably place bacon, you can add Bacon Salt. Bearing in mind, that Bacon Salt is vegetarian, kosher, and shelf-stable, attributes not normally associated with bacon itself. In sum, Bacon Salt can go where no bacon has gone before.

If I could only stand mayo, I’d be all over this.

I guess I’ll stick with the Bacon Salt instead.

Hah, and this pokes my brain with another advantage of bacon salt for military personel: I imagine many places you can go to now don’t smile very much on the idea of eating pork, ham, or bacon. Bacon salt can at least give you the taste of home. That said, I don’t really know if the military considers local dietary restrictions when shipping rations for soldiers overseas.

We usually don’t jump in on conversations happening online, but when we launched Bacon Salt, The Straight Dope was huge for us. Because of all of you helping to spread the word, we ended up quitting our jobs and pursuing bacon-flavored interests full-time. And it’s been a blast.

So… needless to say we love The Straight Dope. Which is why the first 5 people to email us at [spreadthelove@baconnaise.com](mailto:spreadthelove@baconnaise.com) with the words “Straight Dope” in the subject line gets a free jar. No strings attached. If you like it, please tell your friends. If you hate it, you’re welcome to do the same!

Thanks again to everyone that helped us get our start - we really appreciate it!

Yours in bacon,
Dave & Justin
