Most especially fuck all those commercials and reminders about _last minute_ gifts which I’ve been getting for the last six weeks. Christmas - to me, anyway, is a DAY, not a fucking month. ---

I just try to think of it as a Festival of Lights. It’s the darkest time of the year and everyone feels icky. Having an excuse to put up some lights and play some festive music (not christmas music, whatever you like) and take a few days off isn’t so bad when you think of it that way. Visiting family is a drag but I limit my time with them severely. ---

I work at a mall. All Christmas Muzak all the time. My sister (who also works there) said she was about to start bringing earplugs to work. I said, a gun. ---

I love it. One of the few times I get to go home and see my family (in small, regulated doses.) I like Christmas carols, and hymns make me weepy even though I’m not a Christian. I love presents. It’s something to do during the otherwise dreary winter season. I know it’s hard to get out of it if you’re a parent, but there’s always the option of… not participating. We haven’t bought many gifts in a few years now, since most of our holiday money is spent travelling to see family. Some day when we have a decent income we probably will, but in the meantime nobody has lynched us for opting out. ---

I like the lights and am, in general, OK with the seasonal exhortations to be a tad nicer to my fellow man. But my gosh, the muzak! It’s a bit of a mystery to me how the same holiday can inspire some of the best and some of the worst music ever written. I had lunch at a BBQ joint yesterday, and I have to believe that Country and Western Christmas music is the most dreary, saccharine crap ever to have oozed out of a $6.99 Walmart discount CD bin. ---
