An above poster wrote that Palin’s children are valid targets because she’s a “national joke.” I happen to consider Obama a “national joke.” But guess what? I still wouldn’t attack his kids. Why not just quote Letterman accurately, and let the readers decide? Or is there too much wiggle room for people to see that he was making a joke at Brisket’s expense? Hell, the joke works even if Palin didn’t bring any daughters to the game; Brisket is so uncontrollable, she could be getting poked anywhere, at anytime, even in the Yankee dugout. That’s the humor. ---

Look at it this way. Rudy Giuliani was at the game in question with Sarah and Willow. They spend all day in the stands eating popcorn and Cracker Jacks and rooting for the (evil) Yankees. Everyone has a great time. Which daughter could Rudy reasonably assume is being referenced? I agree that you and I and Rudy would all reluctantly give Letterman the benefit of the doubt and concede that he was talking about Bristol. (You, I’m sure, wouldn’t be so reluctant.) But can you at least admit that Letterman’s nasty attempt at humor could also be construed as a swipe at the younger sister? She was there; Bristol wasn’t. Letterman certainly understands this. That’s why he felt compelled to clarify that the rude comment was aimed at the older sister. Why else would he even bother to do that if it was so clear who the “joke” was aimed at? Letterman took a swing at Palin and miscalculated huge. I have no problem with Sarah Palin now having her turn to make a few barbed comments of her own at Letterman’s expense. He’s a big boy; he can take it. And I’m still predicting a real apology. Letterman’s best move would have been to issue a statement late this afternoon specifically apologizing to the Palins, and accepting full responsibility for the botched stab at humor. The weekend news cycles would have been all “Dave apologizes” for two full days, Palin could’ve issued a statement accepting the apology and the entire thing would be forgotten by Monday’s show. They both would’ve come out classy. ---
