Being from the “Great Plains”; I had no idea that Palin went to a baseball game with the 14 y.o. daughter. I’ll even assume that few knew ahead of time what was Palin’s agenda and who she was taking with her. I do know that Palin ran, in part, on a christian family values platform, which includes (I guess) an ‘abstinence only’ plan. I also know that one of her daughters was already pregnant and unmarried and not out of high school yet during the republican convention. I think I know that said daughter, after having had the child, is now on some kind of preaching abstinence only thing. I know there is a baseball player that has the nickname A-Rod, and that he has been in the news for things other than sports. Other than the above things, I don’t really follow the personal lives of politicians and athletes. I feel fairly safe in assuming that a huge majority of people in the Letterman nationwide audience, upon hearing the joke, assumed the daughter in question was Bristol. I am even thinking that perhaps the joke writers themselves -assumed- it was Bristol. If the joke writers hear the phrase “Palin went to a ball game with her daughter”, I doubt they all thought it was anyone other than Bristol. These are not news writers, they are joke writers. Checking out “facts” is below “try to be funny” on things they should do. ---

It’s a lame joke and a lame faux outrage moment. That said, calling Bristol, “Brisket”, isn’t going to win any joke of the year awards either. ---

Not that I care, really, but I do agree that Dave is getting nasty in his old age. The only late night show I really like these days is Craig Ferguson’s, and that’s because he’s funny and seems to really like other people. If I wanted to watch a pathetic recluse, I’d actually have some choice of family members - I wouldn’t need to turn on Dave’s show. ---

(I said it was _less_ funny than Palin’s campaign, but that’s setting the bar pretty high.) What I said is that **Fuzzy Dunlop** ’s explanation is absurd, which it is. The joke is about Willow Palin getting pregnant like her sister did. Without that info I assumed that the joke was about her daughter who was **known** to have a history of pregnancy. Even with the younger daughter situation I still don’t see the outrage here. The joke was pointed squarely at Palin and Rodriguez , not Palin’s daughter. The daughter is actually a prop in the joke and did easily remain nameless. The jab of the joke is that Palin’s moral position is undermined by her inability to enforce that with her children and ARod is an over-the-top playboy. If Dave had meant to point the joke at a specific daughter he would have named her. ---

Or maybe I’ll just sing along to the puppets until I recover. The joke itself? Lame, no more offensive than the usual late-night fare, and typical Letterman. I tend not to watch non-animated programming on television (and I NEVER watch late-night talk shows), so I missed the Letterman show. So I’m not going to bother forming an opinion on whether the joke was appropriate or not. I DO know one thing, though. This is probably just the break the McCain campaign has been waiting for. ---

It was a joke, told by an idiot, full of fury, blah blah blah. The joke wasn’t very funny and fell flat. The joke teller hiself stopped being funny quite a while ago. Other than that, who the hell cares. Save the outrage for things that matter. ---
