OK, I’ve read **Opalcat’s** and can confirm that a lot of what that fellow wrote was right on target. He mentions that he hadn’t seen the movie and was basing his conclusions from the previews and some stills, but his conclusions are sound. I saw Atlantis last week on board the Disney Wonder and noticed right off the bat that the first part of the movie set in the city was very similar in style to 101 Dalmations (the ship’s TV system has two channels that run nothing but Disney toons and movies and I saw 101D the day before). Actually, “Atlantis” seems to have three different styles: 101D, extreme realism (especially when the sub is battling the monster), and the villain’s female assistant looked an awful lot like she was drawn from “American Flagg” (Howard Chaykin comic from the early '80s). ---

**Wishbone** - Just because **Atlantis** and **Nadia** draw upon the same sources doesn’t mean that one is ripping off the other, and since neither of us have yet seen Atlantis I don’t think it’s fair to conclude that it is a rip-off based just on a couple of stills from the film. As I mentioned in the other Atlantis/Nadia thread, it has also been argued by certain anime fans that **Nadia** was itself a rip-off of **Laputa**. Many popular movies tend to resemble other popular movies; that isn’t nessecarily a sign of intellectual dishonesty. Even if there are elements in **Atlantis** that were inspired by **Nadia** , there’s a world of difference between homage and plagarism. Okay, maybe not a world of difference, but at the very least a large moon… The mechanical monsters shown in the old Fleischer **Superman** cartoons would later show up again in **Laputa** , **Ren and Stimpy** , and a bunch of other films that I can’t remember off the top of my head. Finally, without having seen the movie, I can’t really imagine that Disney would blatantly rip off **Nadia** … at least, not after the controversy that they had with **The Lion King** in Japan. The Japanese market for animation is huge, and I doubt that the business-minded Disney execs would give the green light for a project that would go opening up old wounds. Of course, as I said I haven’t seen the movie yet, so I cannot comment on what actual similarities may exist. **Arden Ranger** - Just because **Wishbone** is being an asshole doesn’t mean that you have to slam Japanese animation, something which you know little about. A lot of animation comes out of Japan; there’s at least as much diversity in their products as there is in US animation. I would agree with the other posters who have said that most commercial animation, regardless of its country of origin, is derivitave crap. They’ve got a worse case of genre induced tunnel vision than the most serious trekkies. I understand the desire to diddle on their sacred cows… however, I don’t think it’s the proper way to go about things. First of all, _all anime is not like that_. It may well be that the anime which is most popular in North America right now is like that, but the Japanese cartoons we see in the rest of the world aren’t. Secondly, these rabid anime fans don’t need to be abused, they need to be gently shown the error of their ways. Sit one of them down and watch **The Iron Giant** , or **Princes et Princesses** , or **Dick Spanner** if you can find it… show them that Japan is not the only source of quality animation. I consider myself to be a fan of all animation. I have to admit that I don’t like Disney much… I think it goes back to my realization in childhood that **Mickey Mouse** is the **Ed MacMayon** of cartoon characters. Even though I don’t enjoy most of their films on a personal level, I can appreciate the technical wizardry that Disney has established. ---

DISNEY SUCKS The plagairism is the least bit discreet. If your going to bite another’s artwork, the least you can do is use one character’s physical appearance from one film and another’s characteristics from another film. Get it? Those Disney bastards copied everything. Don’t give me that “it was part of the original legend or book” shit, cause it wasn’t, and it’s wrong. **Of course I am basing my hypothesis on 10 frames out of 10,000. Of course stupid. Of course I am, stupid.** Those frames compared the characters as depicted by Disney and as they were portrayed in _Nadia_. If you didn’t see the ripoff evidence before your eyes when you went to the webpages above, you are not only **stupid** but you are **BLIND!!!** And in that case I feel pity. It is very clear that all of you who are in support of Disney against my charge of plagairism are all getting paid to cover for their asses, because there’s no way you could all be that stupid. ---

Tengu, please don’t be upset that I have made you feel stupid for having tried, quite valiantly(ha), to justify the actions of the entire Disney Animation Support Team, including producers, writers, animators, et al. I did not mean that there was a legal justification of the makers of Nadia to press charges against Disney if they felt so compelled. But I feel that they certainly have every right to do so. You say that Disney did not copy a fair amount from Nadia, but your absolutely wrong. I’m sure Disney bought the rights of Nadia before production even began. Most large corporations, such as Disney, explore these potential pitfalls, to avoid a financial catastrophe that would ensue unless properly initiated. ---

Tengu, what worries me is that you actually think this shit is OK. How could You? Why are you making yourself to be an asshole when clearly you know that it is not OK of Disney to copy other people’s original work. Most of all I’m let down. I am offended that Disney would use someone else’s character ideas in a movie. I don’t care if it’s a remake of a movie that is also about Atlantas, as was _Nadia_, putting it in the same “genre”. That does not give them a right to copy the personal characteristics of most of its animated cast. Doesn’t anybody else see this? Tengu, you should work for the tobacco companies.
