I should feel ashamed of being angry and contemptuous of people who eagerly build homes on beaches and then lose everything in the inevitable flooding, but I do not. Guess what, assholes. Global climate change is going to turn the 160 mile river you call a state into a floodplain. Where it isn’t just salt water. In all the reportage about Hurricane Helene, there are just tiny sparks of mentioning why it happened. Helene is going to be the new normal, fuckheads. The only smart moves are to buy a e-car, stop flying, stop eating beef, and put people in office who will put climate change at the top of their priority list. And move to higher ground. Not that moving will save you now. Or me either. ---

It’s also a who’s who of the “I’ve got more money then you” yachting world. They’ve got Russian Oligarchs yachts, Betsy Devos yachts, Saudi Royal Family yachts, Cartel yachts, Robber Baron yachts, Cayman Island Money Launderer yachts, Human Trafficker Kingpin yachts, Questionable Porn CEO yachts, etc, etc. It’s almost like there is a swamp with a layer of scum on top of it… at every marina & wearing polo shirts or bikinis. Hurricanes are just natures way to make sure the Rays and the Gators get enough to eat. ---

Yeah, this is what annoys me on several fronts. “The damn government is always interfering in my rights and telling me what to do!” Then they’re first in line for a bail out or outright handout when the shit hits the fan. I saw that shit for years in Alaska. Hell, a large percentage of the jobs up there are state or federal, yet all you hear is “the damned gubmint”. ---

I’m old enough to remember when New England was suffering from energy shortages in midwinter and the reaction from the Southwestern oil states was “Let the Eastern bastards freeze in the dark, hyuk hyuk.” Now it’s hard to muster any sympathy for the folks who vote for climate-change deniers, don’t want federal aid to go to those damned “liberal” places, but want FEMA help and will rebuild right where they were before. ---

Is there any part of the country that isn’t at risk of natural disaster? Hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, wildfires, tornadoes. Where exactly is the safe spot that you think all sane people should be crammed into? ---

I’d think Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Nebraska and South Dakota are free from most natural disasters. Maybe a bad snow storm is the worst thing. ---

What’s bizarre is that what one would expect is that people would be leaving the states with the highest risk and moving to the states with the lowest risk: yet Florida is increasing in population 300,000 to 400,000 every year. ---

Florida has no income tax. I think that is what attracts most people. Also, you can shield assets like your house in Florida from collection after having been sued (IIRC OJ Simpson is one example of someone who moved to Florida in order to avoid having to pay out on civil suits). ---
