Years ago, shortly after the Loma Prieta quake, I read an article about some poor sap who’d been run over by hurricane Hugo in North Carolina then moved to San Jose just in time for Loma Prieta. He said he liked hurricanes better than earthquakes because they give you time to pack. ---

Neither earthquakes nor hurricanes truly scare me. If you have built in a sane manner (apparently no one in Florida does that) you are going to be okay, probably. Fire, however, scares the shit out of me. I’ve evacuated in front of two wildfires, and know plenty of people who were burnt out. I never want to experience that again. ---
