Why thank you, ma’am. I’m living in the East Village, probably the most mind-blowing neighbourhood in the world. Every day is an adventure.

Theuglyruth, you’re pathetic. Do you actually have blood flowing in your veins, or just some pale grey liquid, incapable of absorbing the energies of the most incredible city Earth has ever seen?

OK, now I hate you - I am totally jealous. My friend, Debbie, used to have the _sweetest_ little place in the East Village. We are talking small, small, small - you know the old joke about having to go outside to change your mind - this place was where they got the joke 🙂 But, it was adorable. I used to stay at her place more often than I would go home.

I visited NYC several years ago. I _loved_ it. Wonderful art museum. They people were friendly. Sure, it was big and kinda scary at times, but I’m from L.A., which can also be big and scary at times.

I sometimes encounter yokel-types who _hate_ L.A., for some of the same reasons theuglytruth hates NYC. My reaction is, “Fine, don’t visit. California won’t miss you.” I smile and shrug. Whoop-de-do. It’s just one less out-of-towner who is going to get lost on the freeways, and hold everyone else up.

Seriously, why care? Some twit from Dog Patch can’t hack it in the Big City? Fine and dandy. They can go back to Dog Patch and leave the Big City to those who can handle it. NYC (or L.A.) is not begging for tourists.

Phooey.

Now, now. I don’t know if it’s about “not handling it,” as much as it’s about the fact that there are a lot of people out there who don’t like gobs of air pollution, horrible traffic, and being packed together like sardines. **Don’t** take this as an endorsement of theuglylie’s bullshit. I’m just saying that there are plenty of people (me, for one) who prefer small towns and medium-sized cities (100,000-200,000 is perfect for me) to the throbbing masses of humanity called New York and Los Angeles.

Yeah, I could handle NYC if I wanted to. I just choose not to. That doesn’t make me some kind of yokel.

Of course I’m not hanging around whining about how much these cities suck, either. I simply avoid them and keep my mouth shut.

Perfectly reasonable and perfectly understandable. Not everyone cares for a big city. My Grandmother was born in a small town in PA, then moved to a slightly larger town in NJ. She takes her trips to NY, but definately prefers not to live here. She likes to live in the small town and just visit the city. There is nothing wrong with that at all.

> [@](#):

> **That doesn’t make me some kind of yokel.**

Of course not. Yokel is as yokel does (as yokel rants).

> [@](#):
>
> \*\*Of course I’m not hanging around whining about how much these cities suck, either. I simply avoid them and keep my mouth shut. \*\*

Therein lies the difference 😉

I’m a New Yorker. I LOVE New York. Of course it has its problems, I would never try to deny it. But, I would never presume to visit someone else’s town and then turn around and carry on and make sweeping generalizations about the whole place and make gross ethnic stereotypes about its citizens and express my wish that the “piece of shit” town “would burn to the ground” after spending two whole days there. If you have a complaint(s), that’s fine. If you don’t like the city, that’s fine. But let’s not go off half cocked.

Sure, you can vent in the Pit. You chose the right Forum. However, the sweeping generalisations in the OP are just SCREAMING to be torn apart. You’re seriously baiting for some strong responses here, e.g. you’re trying to piss people off deliberately. I’ll give you a few examples.

> All I heard on the radio up there are all these moronic New York assholes bragging and boasting about the Series. The fact that either of these teams has brought one single ounce of joy to the hearts of any of these scumbags makes me sick to my stomach.

So New Yorkers are all assholes and scumbags.

All of them, not a single exception.

Scumbags, I tell you, the lot of them! If you think New York is complicated, the average European city will leave you crying in the middle of the street. Idiot.

> [@](#):
>
> Most likely these idiot Yankee and Met fans will riot and engage in a civil war and end up burning this piece of shit city to the ground.

How the hell do yuo expect to get away with this sort of shit, TUT? Of COURSE people will tear you a new one, and rightly so.

> [@](#):

Are you catching on to the pattern yet? Sweeping generalisations, TUT. Deliberately taking the piss.

You’re the schoolbook definition of a troll. Now, I have a few questions for you.

[li]What’s your backpeddle line this time? You used the “LOL thanks for taking the bait guys LOL” the last time around, so you’re gonna have to come up with something new.[/li][li]Are you gonna publish this razor sharp analysis for good money as well, just like all the shit on your website we so dearly remember from last time?[/li]

One thing I’ve learned in my vast 30 years of life experience. It’s the truth, so take it for what it’s worth:

When you think everyone else is acting like a total asshole, it’s you. You’re the asshole, not the rest of the world/city/whatever.

So lighten up, asshole.

TUT is obviously yanking chains, and doing it well. Nobody can be that stupid in reality, I hope. NYC is a fun place to visit although it’s a tad crowded for me. I have found folks in NYC to be friendly, and in the Village, _very_ friendly. 🙂

If TUT is serious in it’s posts, then all I can say is, if you find NTC noisy and confusing, try getting around in Bangkok or Jakarta. Sheesh!

New York and New Yorkers find resentment all the time. I would take it as a compliment.

While not from New York, I am from a big city, Philadelphia (although only half the size of New York).

We love to hate New York, but it’s really because of their sports team successes. Overall, we know that big cities are cultural centers and the place where everything is happening.

I love New York, but you can’t expect to drive like you’re in the burbs, or on the farm. Like any big city, you have to know how to work it. You have to kow the ins and outs, of which there are many. It’s not simple to live in a big city.

I also hate New York because I am bred to hate it. But, I love to go there because, as much as I love Philly, New York is happening on a whole other scale.

It’s a big city. If you find you aren’t up to it, keep you opinions to yourself.

My experience is that simple minded (narrow minded) people hate big cities. To reiterate another poster: That’s your problem…

OK, you are right, now I will backpeddle again. Only 99.9% of New Yorkers are scumbags and assholes. I humbly apologize.

Let me check- DAMN you got me again. OK there are 2 exceptions. There’s a guy who lives in Staten Island that is OK and a woman in Manhattan at a bagel shop that was very nice once. Other than that, no exceptions.

Scumbags, I tell you, the lot of them! If you think New York is complicated, the average European city will leave you crying in the middle of the street. Idiot.\*\*

I have absolutely NO desire to go visit Europe either.
And please don’t call me names. You don’t see me doing that, do you? My goal here is to have a provocative intelligent debate of the issues here.

How the hell do yuo expect to get away with this sort of shit, TUT? Of COURSE people will tear you a new one, and rightly so.

Are you catching on to the pattern yet? Sweeping generalisations, TUT. Deliberately taking the piss.

You’re the schoolbook definition of a troll. Now, I have a few questions for you.

[li]What’s your backpeddle line this time? You used the “LOL thanks for taking the bait guys LOL” the last time around, so you’re gonna have to come up with something new.\*\*[/li]
\*\*

I already answered that. I backpeddled again. I mean there is no way I can debate you. You win. Happy?
**[li]Are you gonna publish this razor sharp analysis for good money as well, just like all the shit on your website we so dearly remember from last time?**[/li]
No. See, I love all of you Dopers SO much, I printed this diatribe for FREE! Now I know all of you out there appreciate my writing so much that you are now going to ask how you can send your money (kind of like that guy in the subway with the bongo drums). But I’ll tell you what I will do.

Since all of you like New York so much, for every Doper that likes this post, feel free to send your money to the Environmental Protection Agency and earmark it for pollution cleanup in Northern New Jersey.

I just want to help. Really.

I can assure you I **am** like that. Very much so. You’re an idiot, therefore you and I can not get along. End of story.

And thanks for giving me a headache. What a trainwreck! Judging by the font, you even proofread it, and thought all the codes looked A-OK. Sadly, you were mistaken and the text equivalent of a bad curry diarrhea came out.

Please stick to your intention of never wanting to visit Europe. We’ll be watching our borders for a mouthfoaming hillbilly. You should be easy to spot.

Hey, that was impressive! Let’s have a round of applause here for the man!

{clears throat} Now, if I may, I’d like to sing you a little song by my good friend Mister Bob Dylan. {sits on stool, picks up acoustic guitar}

Come you ladies and you gentlemen, a-listen to my song.
Sing it to you right, but you might think it’s wrong.
Just a little glimpse of a story I’ll tell
Bout an East Coast city that you all know well.
It’s hard times in the city,
Livin’ down in New York town.

Old New York City is a friendly old town,
From Washington Heights to Harlem on down.
There’s a-mighty many people all millin’ all around,
They’ll kick you when you’re up and knock you when you’re down.
It’s hard times in the city,
Livin’ down in New York town.

It’s a mighty long ways from the Golden Gate
To Rockefeller Plaza n’ the Empire State.
Mister Rockefeller sets up as high as a bird,
Old Mister Empire never says a word.
It’s hard times from the country,
Livin’ down in New York town.

Well, it’s up in the mornin’ tryin’ to find a job of work.
Stand in one place till your feet begin to hurt.
If you go a lot o’ money you can make yourself merry,
If you only got a nickel, it’s the Staten Island Ferry.
And it’s hard times in the city,
Livin’ down in New York town.

Mister Hudson come a-sailin’ down the stream
And old Mister Minuit paid for his dream.
Bought your city on a one-way track,
‘F I had my way I’d sell it right back.
And it’s hard times in the city,
Livin’ down in New York town.

I’ll take all the smog in Cal-i-for-ne-ay,
‘N’ every bit of dust in the Oklahoma plains,
‘N’ the dirt in the caves of the Rocky Mountain mines.
It’s all much cleaner than the New York kind.
And it’s hard times in the city,
Livin’ down in New York town.

So all you newsy people, spread the news around,
You c’n listen to m’ story, listen to m’ song.
You c’n step on my name, you c’n try ‘n get me beat,
When I leave New York, I’ll be standin’ on my feet.
And it’s hard times in the city,
Livin’ down in New York town.

ugly’s last post required me to press my PageDown key **twenty** times. Not that I actually _read_ it. His original “Vinnie and Guido” comment was enough for me. We Italians singlehandedly pulled all of Europe up out of the dark ages and this is the thanks we get? Perhaps if ugly lived in a town with as many cultural events, points of interest, historical landmarks and varied shopping districts as NYC, he wouldn’t have time to write a post that approaches the Koran in total length.

I, for one, would like to hear the details about the sordid little burg that ugly lives in. You got any stoplights?

I have only been to New York once. I was 15 and fresh off the farm. I had never been anywhere that large before and I was the slack-jawed yokel standing in traffic saying “Well Golly Gee!” for the first few hours. After I picked my jaw up off the ground I had more fun than ever. I felt like I was at a 24 hour street festival that went on forever. I had no trouble getting around. I took the subway (oh wow) and I took taxis if I couldn’t navigate the subway well enough to get where I was going. The taxi drivers were nice enough and even interested in my accent (thick Southern). The number of the ones who were rude were about proportional to the general population (meaning in any group of people, you are going to have a few assholes). I don’t guess I visited the same New York. I had a lovely time and I should have been a main target for rudeness (young Southern out-of-town redneck girl).
Back at my one stop-light town I told of the wonders of “New Yory Citah” and anyone who had been there agreed with me. I really think it’s just you, TUT.

Don’t worry about me coming over. Europe is such a wnderful place to visit- crappy plumbing, shitty TV, genocide, a falling Euro, etc… I’ll stick right here in the Good 'Ol US of A. There is a reason why more Europeans migrate to the U.S. then vice versa you know.

Fortunately, we are smart enough to dump most of you welfare leeches right where you all belong- New York!

Hey, don’t mention it. We all get a little “wacky” sometimes. Hugs!

\*\*This thread reminds me of a funny story. I was on a business trip to sunny Grand Rapids, MI taking a cab from the airport. Now, I live in upstate NY, not the city. I have 13acres of property, gorgeous walking paths and gardens, and clean country livin’. So, we’re pulling away from the airport parking lot and the cabbie asks where I’m from. At this point we’re passing a FILTHY NASTY DUMP of some sort- literally a dump. He says “NY? Well, I ain’t never been there, but I bet you don’t have fresh air like this there!” I almost pissed my pants laughing. I just said “Nope- I’m not that lucky”. What an idjit.
