[New information](http://www.nytimes.com/2016/12/31/opinion/sunday/nixons-vietnam-treachery.html?action=click&pgtype=Homepage&clickSource=story-heading&module=opinion-c-col-left-region®ion=opinion-c-col-left-region&WT.nav=opinion-c-col-left-region) reveals that Nixon, _before he was ever elected_, actively sabotaged Johnson’s '68 peace accord talks that would have been brokered by the Soviets. This was always suspected, but until recently there was no actual proof. By 1968, 30,000 Americans had died in that shithole. This could have stopped the slaughter, but instead we now have a wall with nearly double that number. Fuck that treasonous motherfucker. He never should have been pardoned. ---

Yeah, I read that today in th’ dead tree papers, too. I hope Satan throws a few extra coals under the Nixon Rotisserie. Years ago, Alison Bechdel’s comic strip “Dykes to Watch Out For” had a character wearing a tee shirt that read “I Don’t Care If He’s Dead, I Still Want to IMPEACH NIXON.” I really want one of those. It would NEVER go out of style. ---

Not to excuse Nixon or Haldeman for illegally sabotaging the negotiations, but the peace talks were were unlikely to succeed in any case while Johnson was in office as he was adamantly against any resolution that left the Communist Party of Vietnam in any kind of control over the country, and it was Johnson who expanded the American ground presence starting in 1965. Fuck Nixon, but fuck Johnson as well, and every other president and presidential advisor who doesn’t understand that entering a ground conflict without a coherent strategy and exit plan is a recipe for disaster. And credit to Obama for not getting us militarily involved in the shitshow that is Syria. Stranger ---

To give the devil his due (and I’m old enough to have sat through the Watergate hearings and cheered when Nixon resigned), he did ‘open’ China, started (or at least signed the bill) for the EPA, and was at least competent in many ways as President. Trump has four years to try to equal that…we shall see. ---

He’s already entering the presidency with more scandal from a fiscal standpoint than any previous US president, making Nixon’s questionable personal use of campaign funds peanuts by comparison, and he’s already created at least two diplomatic incidents before even taking office. Given the rogue’s gallery of Cabinet members and department heads he is nominating and his children running his “blind trust” I don’t think it’ll be many months before he’ll be up to his dead cat hair in scandal and corruption only matched by the best Third World strongman despots, especially since he isn’t even making an effort to conceal his avarice and surrounds himself with apologists who don’t seem to be even effectively counseling for restraint. Nixon was one of the more intelligent, well informed presidents we’ve had in the modern era (in contrast to Trump). Which just goes to show that being intelligent and well informed, while certainly a virtue for a president, is no guarantee of not fucking up royally. But yeah, Nixon had a number of wins that can’t be denied. It’s a shame that he was, in the end, a crook. ---

Nixon was a petty, vindictive, nasty piece of work, paranoid asshole but he was not our worst President. Maybe the worse man to be President but as President he did a lot of good. Sadly this fails to balance out the gaping knife wound he left in the respect and trust in the office of the President. Shrub & Buchanan were both worse without question and strong arguments could be made for Harding and many others. ---
