End of a long day at work. Went to the grocery store, did my weekly shop, headed for home tired and hungry. The road is blocked off half a mile from my house. No problem, I’ll just take the side road and come around the other side. It’s a bit out of the way but no big deal. The road is blocked off on the other side about five hundred feet from my house. Oh for cryin’ out… I pull up to the blockade and roll my window down. “I live right over there. Can I go home?” The nice man in the fluorescent vest moved some cones so I could get home. Seems that the road is blocked off because Something happened at the bridge near my house. There were (and still are) several utility trucks with bright flashing lights gathered around the bridge. I have no idea what happened because it’s too dark to see any fine details. Part of me wants to saunter up the road, but I don’t want to be a looky-loo. I went up to the woodline at the edge of the property and peered over the hill. I think a truck went off the bridge but I’ll have to wait until tomorrow to see for sure. ---

No layoffs, but people are quitting in droves and hardly anybody is applying unless they’re _management_. In most cases _management_ equals a 20-something college grad who’s been grinding away in a back room in a non-food retail situation. The worse thing you can do, as one of those clueless 20-somethings during your walk-around interview is look utterly terrified at all the hands-on stuff you’re gonna have to learn FAST, whether it’s baking or manning a grill/sandwich station, making pizzas, cleaning the rotisserie. Because, buddy boy, you’re gonna be in for the shock of your life when we’re all off and it’ll be up to you to run this entire department. But of course they’d hire you-with-no-food-experience: You’re cheap and we’re not. ---

I have a friend who does sunflower seeds. She started after quitting smoking. So it is better, but not much. I hate seeing those husks everywhere. I make her clean them up if I find them in my vicinity. She complies and laughs. What I hate, hate is someone eating chips and taking exactly 3 bites, like crunch, crunch, crunch, swallow. Makes me stabby. ---

I have a package that was supposed to arrive here in Eastern Washington today VIA USPS, sent from Jackson MS. It won’t, because it just departed from Anchorage Alaska on the scenic route from Mississippi to Washington. I always wanted to see Alaska, and I’m jealous that my package gets to and I don’t. ---

Remember the days when you ordered something from a catalogue and it always said, “please allow 6 to 8 weeks delivery time”. Aww, the good old days. Tracking packages and expecting the earliest delivery possible is making us all a bunch of neurotics. ---

All sympathy for Buttercup (the dog, not the poster) has left the building and is now on the way to Hawaii. She managed to talk Wesley into pulling out about an inch worth of stitches (on a 5 inch incision), had to go back to the vet and now both hounds are wearing the Cone of Shame and I’m keeping a very close eye on the cats. **ENugent** , I am really sorry that happened, and I hope you aren’t falling into self-doubt over this. Too late to edit, but still a valid mini-rant. Yesterday, we bought new entry rugs because we had been using our old ones and they didn’t match. Entry rugs tend to be heavier than kitchen or face towels and these are no exception. Except for the colors, they are basically the same as the ones we had before. Missy the portly 12 lb cat is offended by the new rugs and has managed to drag 2 into different rooms. While my BB was “outraged” when he found the one from in front of the French doors in the dining room in one of the guest rooms, I’m starting to find this pretty amazing. I’ve seen her dragging things around and she has to hold her head high to keep whatever she is dragging from getting tangled around her front feet. Managing to move a 3 foot by 6 foot rug couldn’t have been easy and she got it around a wall, through the living room, down the hall and half way onto the guest room bed.
