As much as I liked the “prime years”, so to speak, of Boomer music, from the Beatles through psychedelia inclusive, by the time I personally bought and owned most of the records, it was definitely considered a retro thing. I was actually a bit worried about getting ribbed for liking “oldies” so much[sup]1[/sup], though that never did happen. In the pop music world of those days, seven or eight years was considered a huge temporal distance between one style or band to another. The real problem is that all these labels and concepts don’t really coincide with the calendar very well. The Sixties, so to speak, didn’t really get going in earnest until about 1964 at the earliest. [sup]1[/sup]That was before one of my suitemates in the dorm decided to show me his ABBA paraphernalia. To this day I have nightmares about the visor that had four flashing LEDs on it.:smack: ---

It was fucking scary. Clubs hurt. Tear gas burns. Rubber bullets can kill you. The maximum prison sentence for burning your draft card was 5 years and 100,000 dollar fine. There was very little popular support for the anti-war protests for a long time and I lived in the Bay area at the time which was pretty liberal in comparison to other parts of this country. We were preceived as dangerous traitors, as scum who were aiding and abetting the enemy. And no, it wasn’t all boomers marching and yes, a portion of the marchers were trying to save their asses but so what? They were still taking real risks to end an oppressive and immoral war. Remember Kent State? Most of my fellow citizens thought the students had it coming. I’m a little baffled by the broad generalizations being tossed around in this thread. I’m not sure why it’s acceptable to unilaterally condemn an entire generation. I can understand these attempts to crawl out from under the stigma via claims that you were born on the Boomer fringes, but really people, there are no exemptions on this score. The calendar doesn’t lie - if your date of birth is between 1946 and 1964, you’re just as vile as anyone else born during that period. Including Oboomer. ---

I was born in 1960, so although I’m a Baby Boomer I was the antithesis of a hippie: I was a Punk. Which means I can segue without hypocrisy into my new role a a cranky old man: “No, go ahead and run on my lawn, you little cunts. It’s crawling with dog shit.” ---
