Short people got no reason to drive (a car without an adjustable seat, wheel, and pedals.)

> Well, not to go so off topic, but your hand shouldn’t rest at top center of the wheel. The theory is that if you should get hit, the airbag will send your hand directly into your face, breaking both. Hands at 9 and 3 will go sideways and not break your face. Just something to think about. If you have no airbag in the steering wheel, then never mind!

Honestly, I hadn’t thought of the airbag aspect because I’ve never had any experience with an airbag deploying; although, I have been involved in a couple of accidents (rear-ended on the highway in heavy traffic and blown off an icy road into a ditch). In both instances, I was able to brace for the impact and, in the first, instinctively managed to turn off the radio (I don’t know why), take the truck out of gear, grip the steering wheel and stand (both feet) on the brake before getting hit. It all happened so fast and yet I still braced in anticipation. Of course, it’s quite possible to have an accident you don’t see coming, but I try to be alert enough to minimize that without being tense. Perhaps, given my past experience, I’m (overly?) confident in my ability to react. You do bring up a good point, though.

Usually, I drive in 10/2 position, but when I’m camped in the fast lane with cruise control activated, I get comfortable. I’m back at 10/2 when traffic is heavier and when changing lanes, since I can’t reach the turn signal from 12 o’clock.

After my post yesterday, I went for another drive and noted that the centered instrument panel does seem to enhance my vision of the highway if only because when I’m looking at the speedo, my peripheral vision is showing me what’s in front of my car; as opposed to looking downward, the eyelids effectively block vision of what’s above the eyeline. It’s subtle, but it’s there.

> If you think this is bad, look at the new MyFord Touch control panel.
>
> That’s a monstrosity. A small screen in the center of the console, displaying all kinds of stuff on the screen, in small fonts, with tiny touch sensitive buttons underneath the screen (but not sensitive to a driver wearing gloves, as in winter in the northern half of the country). You have to page through menus and press button after button for something as simple as adjusting the radio. Just another ‘feature’ to take your eyes off the road and risk an accident.
>
> Not just annoying, but positively dangerous!

That sounds like a truly terrible design idea - when I’m messing with controls as I’m driving, I take the quickest possible glance to make sure I’m hitting the right knob - forcing me to page through menus to do something like adjust a radio or the heater would be a deal-breaker for me buying a car. And not being able to do it with my gloves on - double deal-breaker.

I’m driving one now (well, not _right_ now) and it never occured to me to complain about it.

In my Saturn I have a center speedometer and it doesn’t bother me in the least. Actually, I prefer it because then I can have my cell phone where the speedometer “should be” and can look at my GPS through my steering wheel.

… was I guess we know who invented the center mount speedo!
