That’s nice. Now probve Israel couldn’t have existed without that money (which was no more, IIRC, than the U.S. gave to many other countrie around the world). Look, as I said, there’s no way we’ll agree on this subject. Was the U.S. instrumental to the foundaion of Israel? Perhaps, but not as much as France was instrumental to the fundation of the U.S. Games of “what if” and “if then” never go anywhere beyond one’s own personal agenda. It’s impossible to know. The amount of money the U.S. sends today is something like 2% of the Israeli GNP. A lot, to be sure (and we’re grateful!), but not something life-saving. ---

I am usually loathe to enter into one of these threads anymore, but the stupid of the OP burns like fire, and what with me being a fireman and all… The grey area that Loopydude refers to is really the solution. If the Middle East would rather America stay home, then we should. It is truly bad form to show up uninvited. We should leave, take our troops, our money, and our businesses, and go home. Shut down the flow of money and people to and from the area, the same way we did with Cuba. Sure, only the people suffer, but they’re suffering now anyway, better they should suffer under someone they like, than the infidels. I feel regret for what our military has done to the innocent Iraqi people, but I’m left to wonder where the worldwide outrage was for the atrocities committed under Hussein? Perhaps I’ve missed it, perhaps it was prevalent and I never saw a news story, or pehaps it was political spin and exaggeration, but AFAIK there was no outcry by the same people who are wringing their hands and stomping their feet about what the troops have done. Frankly,I’ve lost all compassion for the area and her people, the same way I’ve lost compassion for so-called ‘battered women’ who expect others to save their bacon, when they refuse to take affirmative steps to extricate themselves from those situations which so greatly endanger them. I understand that it’s not easy to leave, or change the situation, but better to die on your feet, than to live on your knees. ---

Man, had we followed Jimmy Carter’s idea (become independent of ME oil), just think of how good things would be today! -no need to get involved in IRAQ -no fleets of 5 MPG SUVs crowding our highways and killling teenagers -clean solar and wind power -no need to have a huge military base on Diego Garcia Island Old Jimmy was right-we could have saved hundreds of billions of $, and thousands of lives, if we could free ourselves from this addiction to ME oil…the ME is a bad place, and a very bad place to be involved in. It has centuries-old fueds, and modern weapons, plus stubborn people who hate eachothe. I can’t imagine a worse place for world powers to be involved. ---
