I’m 56. What made me feel old was when my mother died earlier this year and I realized I was now the family patriarch. My dad died years ago and my parents were both only children. My brother and sister are both younger than I am. So I’m the oldest. That kinda sucks. ---

In a year and 5 days, I’ll be 69. No birthday ever meant a damn thing to me except the 50th. It was on that day that I was diagnosed as diabetic. On that day, the phrase “the rest of my life” stopped being an infinite abstraction with a constantly receding horizon. Enjoy your 30th while you can. ---

30 wasn’t a big deal to me either. I was already married, had a house and was a parent so it wasn’t like someone was announcing last call at a really fun bar. 41 (my age now) was the really big one for me. I had always been absolutely convinced ever since I was a little kid that I would die when I was exactly 40 and there was nothing I could do about it. I never even made any plans past that age figuring that I would never live to see them. I woke up on June 15th of this year just as alive as ever and had mixed feeling of ‘Oh Joy’ and ‘Oh shit!, I better come up with some type of half-assed plan.’ I will say that I did not enjoy my 30’s at all, not one bit. I would prefer to forget the whole decade. It is that weird twilight of being sort of young but not really but not having the real experience or perspective that you get as you get older. I love being in my 40’s so far. ---

My son was born on my 30th birthday, took the edge off that and every birthday since. I first felt old when my daughter asked me advice about starting an IRA. Jesus. I liked it better when we talked about what the cow says. ---

30 wasn’t a big deal, and my 30s have been LIGHTYEARS better than my 20s. In your 30s, you have a lot more experience and a lot less to prove, and can finally get down to business. ---

I was at my physical best at 35 YO. That’s when my left knee needed to be 'scoped from running. Then I had a heart attack at 46 YO. However I’ve done things like ride my bicycle over 200 miles in one day 4 different times since then. I’m 60 YO now and have ridden a century ride of 100 miles last month and plan on doing at least one more plus I’m signed up for 2 half marathons. Age is just a number. I my case, it’s getting to be a big number. ---

Turning 30 was horrible for me. I clung to my twenties like it was my blankie. I’m 38 now and the prospect of 40 doesn’t bother me in the least. I think (and hell, what do I know?) that your 30s and 40s are the best years. You are still young enough to enjoy most things but have enough maturity and experience to avoid and not stress out about meaningless things. I frittered away my 20s worrying about things that as I look back upon them were ridiculous. ---
