Cheeky, I’m confused how reporting that an infected cow may have come from Canada is an indictment of Canadians. Did anyone accuse the farmer of intentionally selling an infected cow? Is anyone even reporting that said bovine was definitely infected when he immoograted? The AIDS virus is believed to have originated in Congo. But…but…but…Those are facts! And any controversey about them is being reported calmly and rationally. And the US data that says it’s 4 1/2 years old actually HURTS the US’s case, not helps it. This is a serious investigation. Not a finger pointing exercise. (And, incidentally, if Canadian officials weren’t on the case immediately after even the possibility that the cow was Canadian was suggested, then that’s horrifying. The canadians should be ashamed of themselves. Luckily, however, I think that the suggesteion that the Canadians didn’t help out asap is just **Cheeky** being an idiot.) ---

Jeezus on a Timbit, what the hell is it with the whining Canadians in this thread? For fuck’s sake, somebody jumps the gun and points a finger at Canada on what _might_ be thin evidence and you get your panties in a wad? A more reasoned complaint, with less hyperbole, insults and shit-slinging, would probably have been much better received. I have to add though, that a lot of the responses here really disappoint me. It’s a shame that some people need to stoop to the level of the OP (and one or two others). ---

A few points: 1. The OP is located in Alberta, and there seems a good chance has already suffered economic nastiness on account of this irrational BSE hysteria, so I’m inclined to cut some slack in that dept. I don’t know what CheekyMonkey’s problem is. 2. If the current reports are borne out, it is very likely that the Canadian beef industry will take a (proportionately) bigger hit over this than the US industry. This is because the US was moving to reopen the border to live animals under a certain age, but now will delay that move. This means, essentially, that both industries are stuck selling to only their domestic market. The Canadian beef industry is (or was) far more export-oriented than the US industry, and hence the oversupply issue will not be as great in the US, and prices won’t drop as far. Additionally, US ranchers have been enjoying record high prices since the ban on Canadian beef was put in place, which puts them in a better position to absorb some losses. Canadian cattlemen, on the other hand, lost huge sums of money this year, and the prospect of at least one more year with similar prices will be very, very painful. Older cows being culled from herds have been selling for ridiculously low prices - like, twenty bucks, which doesn’t cover the auction yard fee. In some cases it’s cheaper to shoot them than to sell them, sadly. 3. How the heck do US meat packing plants get away with shipping meat from suspect animals before test results got back?!? 4. The whole issue of where any particular BSE case on this continent originated is largely irrelevant. For decades the beef industries of the two countries have been so integrated that the border is largely irrelevant. Either country banning the other country’s beef is much like New Mexico and Texas banning each other’s beef. Silliness. If there’s a problem on one side of the line, it’s indicative of the same problem on the other side. 5. In the interest of full disclosure, I have family and friends in the Canadian beef industry. So far they’re managing, but you know, I can’t think of a single one in the lot where someone in the family doesn’t have an off-farm job. I expect the situation in some parts is far, far worse. ---
