Do things the son doesn’t do. Odd jobs. Mow the lawn. Fix small jobs around the house if you’re capable of doing it. Offer to cook dinner, do dishes, walk dogs, vacuum. Do something to be useful. Don’t just pork her daughter and use her electricity. Otherwise don’t you have a place of your own? Let your girlfriend have Christmas with her family, then pick her up the day after and take her to your place for the day/overnight if mom’s okay with it. Just stop being useless and underfoot because “Oh there’s nothing to do”. That’s what a fucking child says when they’re stuck at grandma’s house for a weekend. You’re allegedly old enough to go to college, fucking act like it. ---

While I agree that doing some chores around the house is a good idea, the OP did mention that 1. the brother has failed two grades in school 2. the OP is actually going to college Those two facts make the brother look like the problem. ---

Yes. Butttt…the brother lives there. The brother is still in high school. And he is both the girls brother and the mothers son so that problem ain’t going away anytime time soon. And when push comes to shove guess who is gonna win most likely? Yeah, he might well be an asshole. And an asshole that doesn’t like the OP. But here’s the thing, guys: _I had no idea that the mother considered me a problem until I posted this thread_. I knew she thought I spent too much time playing video games, but I never assumed that that was a real problem. Apparently it is. Her mother drives to and from work on weekdays, and her work is very close to where I live. I can ride with her to her house… Or my girlfriend can get a 20-minute car ride (if she can get it, anyways) to the nearest town with a bus line, take an hour-long bus, and then a local train to where I am. Oh, and fridays, this doesn’t work either way because she has music lessons in the evening. I don’t drive. You see how this complicates things? 😕 ---

You don’t drive. No wonder the mom thinks you’re a loser. Hey, not driving and living in an urban area with good public transit is one thing. Living in the sticks without wheels is a whole other level of uselessness. That goes for both of you - she’s just as bad if she doesn’t drive either. How do you get to be 17 and 18 and not drive? And not be actively working to be able to drive? And not be actively working to have and keep a cheap set of wheels? How do you get to school, work, the grocery? How do you have your own place and not have a car?? What? Ride a bike everywhere? And you don’t ask to make yourself useful around the house, you just do. Just get off your ass and do stuff that needs doing. ---

My gawd…I can hardly believe the level of assumptive pretentious dickheadery that is being oozed out by the replies in this thread. Seriously…it’s ridiculous. When did telling a teenager he’s “useless” and “a loser” ever help to motivate positive change? And the assuming…Jeebus Somersaulting Christmas. Maybe, just maybe, a car isn’t in the financial cards right now. Maybe, just maybe, he could squeeze really hard on his wallet and make it happen. But being 17 and 18 and not driving is NOT rare, and is NOT a sign of laziness. I didn’t drive until I was 18, because my parent’s wouldn’t let me get my license until I was fully “off the stupid” as they put it. And there’s no way I could have afforded my own car, because I hadn’t worked anything other than biking-distance part time jobs and pissed my money away on immature teenage things. So let’s all take a step back from the judgmental bong of self-righteousness and try to not motivate another youngster in a tough situation to commit homicide/suicide through a warped view of the world; a view created in part by the reactions to legitimate concerns raised here. **Budget Player Cadet** - I feel your shit-tastic situation. But for reals…it may be time to do a cost/benefit analysis on the relationship. If it comes up that you’re still hopelessly in lust with her, then maybe some effort needs to be spent in removing your relationship from her house. If not, and you decide that focus on college is more important than the nonsense surrounding a statistically-likely-to-die high school romance, then good on you, break it off and move on. Either way…sounds like this thread is full of a bunch of dicks. ---
