Fortunately she’s relatively powerless. The governor controls the lockdown measures for the most part, and ours has been one of the best in the country at handling this crisis. She’s just a crazy agitator. What’s especially stupid about this is even if Vegas declared itself fully open for business, no one is going to want to take a vegas vacation in the middle of this pandemic. And no one is going to want to spend money on a vacation in such unsure times financially, either. So we’re looking at, what, 10-20% of the normal utilization rate? So the upside, even if you’re a greedy owner who only cares about money, is pretty low. On the other hand, Vegas instantly becomes part of the news worldwide in a negative way. Tourists are told in the strongest terms that we do not care about your health or safety. Vegas, even with limited traffic, becomes an international travel hub and epicenter for the virus. The casinos end up getting shut down anyway, but now Vegas’ reputation is in the dump, so not only have we dragged on the quarantine period, but Vegas’ reputation will suffer greatly in the future. So, almost no upside, lots of downsides, people will die, and even if you are greedy and heartless, you barely make a buck anyway. It’s just a terrible, stupid idea from every angle. ---

She can “open up Vegas for business,” but relatively few clients come, and if having so few people results in few to no new coronavirus infections, she can then say, “See, told you the fear was overblown. We opened up and we’ve seen safe results.” ---

It is my fondest wish that, if the last couple of years have taught us nothing else, we should expect fundamental competence of our elected leaders, at all levels. But, as with all of my wishes, I find that I am without a lamp and a genie. Pity, that. ---

Y’know, I’m on record as saying that the lockdowns have been taken further than is wise, and will end up causing more trouble than they solve… but first of all, we’re talking about casinos here, not schools or any sort of productive business, and second, if she wants the businesses to have a plan for how to stay safe, well, she’s the mayor. Coming up with plans is kind of her job. That said, surely some of the blame lies with the people of Las Vegas for electing an incompetent mob-proxy. ---

She wanted to reopen the casinos, the hotels, the restaurants, the shows and all the small businesses - so that hundreds of thousands of visitors would come (and then return home all over the US and the rest of the World.) 😕 So we’re all thinking - that would lead to a massive spread of the virus. :smack: And her reply to that was: - the casinos are very clean (of course that won’t stop the spread of the virus) - we need the money (ah, the Trump way of behaving :eek:) - everyone can stay six feet apart at all times When asked how hundreds of thousands of visitors would all stay six feet apart, she confidently said “I don’t know. That’s up to the casinos.” Words fail me.
