On the other hand, I’ve gotten some pretty good deals from places like RueLaLa and Kings Lane. Maybe I’m not angry enough about it. ---

I have a rogue yahoo mail account for just this purpose. I never use it for real mail or anything personal or important. Just an account I can give out when I need access to something. It just piles high with junkmail I never read. I do go in about once a month and purge everything in mass quantities. ---

Or at the very least an outlier when it comes to buying habits of the general population. But seriously, make a free email account on yahoo or something and just use that if you hate unsolicited email marketing. ---

Had a conversation about this at a breakfast meeting with some entrepreneurial startup types. Neither were surprised, nor even thought it was a bad idea necessarily. Another example is an online stored named Frank and Oak, again an outlet aimed at trustafarians who probably don’t give a shit about handing over an email address when they’re paying $600 for a flannel logger’s shirt inundated with genuine Hemingway sweat. Their email address barrier is doing exactly what it should: keeping people like me out, who would never buy their shit anyway; and for those who do sign up, the barrier acts like club fees to keep out the riff-raff and make the shoppers feel exclusive. ---

BTW, I’m speaking specifically of Targets’s website. Apparently you have to enter everything including your credit card number before it will give a shipping quote. That’s ridiculous. ---
