ok i have a general question. from what i have read of this thread, if i were \*\* suezeekay \*\* i would not be showing my face around these boards again. Is it standard practice to drive people away? i dont mean this as an insult to **Lissa** because her pitting was certainly deserving… but in \*\* suezeekay’s \*\* case, does anyone actually stick around after a pitting such as this? do they slink off into the sunset, or continue to post, hoping others will ignore their reputation? i have not been around long enough to observe the long term affects of a solid 😉 pitting. ---

See, the thing is, you (presumably) have some level of social awareness and concern for how you are perceived, so of course you feel this way. Obviously, **suezeekay** does not, otherwise she’d have enough sense to keep her racist blatherings to herself. So it’s unlikely that she’s self-aware enough to let this pitting drive her from the boards. It might keep her from participating in future topics that touch on race, but who knows? She doesn’t strike me as bright enough to learn not to touch a hot stove twice. ---

Usually, people try to defend themselves in these threads. I’ve never known someone to leave based solely on a single pitting. Most of the time, there are several, and yes, they usually continue to post-- they don’t agree with the criticism, so see no reason why it should get in the way. The three predicitions I made in my OP is usually the way it goes. Someone spouts shit, and gets hammered for it again and again until they storm off in a huff or finally cross the line and get banned. There have been several famous blowouts to this effect. We don’t suffer fools gladly here. Though we’ve been accused of it many times, we’re not hostile to people with different views, provided they can discuss and defend those views intelligently. We are never cruel to those who are honestly seeking knowledge, but we have been known to be brutal to the stupid or willfully ignorant. ---

That’s an excellent question. When Pitted like this, posters can respond any way they like, or make no response at all. They can ignore the Pitting, and continue to do just as they were doing, or they can try to take something from the Pitting and learn from it, especially if they consider the source as being someone who is not a hair-trigger Pitter and is generally easy-going and tolerant. Some people actually _do_ learn to adjust their behaviour after a thorough Pitting (and possibly a couple of warnings). Others don’t learn or don’t care. To answer your question, it is not our standard practice to drive people away, but we don’t suffer jerks gladly, either. We are developing a community here, and like all communities, some people fit better than others. If you obey the Cardinal Rule (Don’t Be A Jerk), we’ll play (relatively) nicely with anybody, but if you don’t obey it, chances are you won’t be particularly happy here. ---
