> I’ll repeat it again. Bush dreamed up the tax cuts that gave us a huge deficit. It is called the Bush Tax cut for a reason. Do you understand that?
> The unfunded wars are real ,Bush did not pay for them with taxes. he did not pay for them at all. Just kicked them down the road. You must be aware of that.

Whatever. I think you have such a closed mind that it’s probably useless to continue. But like Cecil, I will try to fight ignorance wherever I can.

You place absolutely _no blame whatsoever_ on the spending side that has driven us to the brink. A spending side that, in the last 4 years, has been driven your buddies in Congress.

And the fact that you cannot understand that it’s not just the wars that are unfunded, it’s everything, is not surprising I guess. Wouldn’t want to let reality get in the way of some good emotionalism, right? Remember, Bush lied, people died, no blood for oil, etc. etc.

By the way, how much of a deficit are you suggesting the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts were responsible for? Numbers, please. I could give you the answer but I’m hoping you can come up with it yourself, perhaps you’ll learn something.

Unfortunately I didn’t until later. Sorry.

He’s wrong of course. A slam dunk in the 4th circuit, and 3-1 favorite with the Supremes.

Take off the binders. The Bush tax cuts account for 3.9 trillion dollars if deficits and it was well known what the result would be when the idiot passed it.

Or blinders 🙂

Try sources that aren’t blatantly partisan. You’ll notice I don’t post stuff from Newsmax. I recommend you read something other than CBPP, Kos, etc.

[this](http://thehill.com/blogs/on-the-money/domestic-taxes/115293-cbo-report-gives-both-sides-ammo-in-debate-over-bush-tax-cuts) would be a good start.

The tax cuts would buy lower unemployment and greater GDP, according to the CBO (the only source you should be citing).

OK, last post for me in this retarded thread, since it’s already bumped.

What Charlie Cook (an unimpeachable, neutral political expert) says is the reason those voters went as they did

> [@](#):
>
> Political scientists have three theories about midterm elections, and all three hold a great deal of merit. The best-known one is the referendum theory – that midterm elections are a referendum on the president and the party in power. This year certainly had an element of that.
>
> The second theory is “surge and decline.” In a presidential election year, the winning side has issues, turnout, and other dynamics creating momentum. Two years later, the circumstances are very different, and those candidates elected in the surge have a hard time surviving. Because Democrats had back-to-back surges in 2006 and 2008, a huge decline was in the offing.
>
> The third theory is “balance.” Presidential candidates almost invariably run toward the center in a general-election campaign (anyone remember Gov. George W. Bush’s “compassionate conservatism?”). Then, upon victory, they pivot toward the party’s flank. Two years later, voters seek a restoration of balance, which is what many of them thought they voted for to begin with.
>
> We saw elements of all three theories this year. As I told a roomful of House Republicans last summer, “I think you are going to win a majority in the House, but you should consider this an ‘unearned’ win.” The bad news for them was that voters didn’t like them and hadn’t forgiven them. But the good news was that this election wasn’t about them – it was about the Democrats.

Your tone made it sound like you were facing immanent Republican representation **shudder**

> [@](#):

> 2.) I had no idea that attitudes had shifted so far in other areas of the state or I would have tried to find some time to volunteer if I thought it would have made a difference.

I’m not going to hold you to a higher standard than the one for myself. I only felt responsible for my local area, so I suppose I was too hasty with you.

> [@](#):
>
> 3.) Disappearing from the SDMB wouldn’t do shit for my ability to volunteer, since I work a typical 9-to-5 office job and post from there.

That was just an example. You’d have to give up something to have a meaningful impact. Now it is voter registration season- I might be able to send you names of some organizations that are involved with that if you’re interested.

Anyway, I still think you are out of line to hate America itself for this. AFAIK you are a lawyer, and therefore should know as well as anyone else that powerful people have been dumbing down populations since before the founding of the country. People apparently are easily led- all we need to do is turn that fact to our advantage. This is potentially easier for Dems since the Pubbies are such bald-faced liars.

Yeah, I am. Barrett and Feingold lost; they just didn’t lose because of \*my \*county. Current incompetent Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker is going to be the governor, and rich nobody teabagger Ron Johnson is replacing the incomparably amazing Russ Feingold as Senator.

It’s been a week now, aren’t we done fucking the voters?

Time to move on to fucking over the voters. Congress will take over there.

Well, my condolences. Still can’t fairly hate America for it though 😛

Why \*can’t \*I hate people who are willfully ignorant?

If you insist, why then of course you _can_ hate them.

This reminds me of a little demonstration I put on when I worked with some JD kids (don’t take that the wrong way). I held up a pen or something and said, “Ok, you guys _hate_ this pen. I’m going to drop it, and you just _totally hate it_ that the thing falls and hits the ground. Okay? 1, 2, 3, Hate It!”

It doesn’t make any difference. The pen falls exactly the same whether you hate it or not. Yeah, maybe you burst a capillary and are a bigger retard than before, congratulations, but otherwise no effect.

It is the same with the voters. You gotta get real about how our system works. People vote. The votes get counted. The winner is declared and they take office. Getting pissed off after stage 3 isn’t going to accomplish anything. Getting pissed off before stage 1, going out into the neighborhoods and getting in everyone’s grill about Prop xxx or candidate xyz… why then you can influence voters to vote your way, and it actually can make a difference.

Do it with an organized group. If there isn’t one, start one. Don’t attempt it alone, and don’t take all the credit. But don’t hate America either. Shit, that’s what Britain’s for 😃

That’s why I learned long ago not to take the results of political elections personally, as I mentioned in this thread quite a while ago. Way back in 1984 I was on the losing side of the Reagan/Mondale election, and that was a much bigger defeat than the Democrats suffered this year.

While I still support the Democrats I don’t base my life, happiness, and well-being on their being successful. Just as it’s prudent to diversify investments to protect yourself from unforseen economic issues, I have arranged my life so that no matter who is in power, I prosper.

Something interesting for our partisanly-blinkered friends with their “popular mandate”:

> [@](#):
>
> Fifty-three percent say income tax cuts that soon will expire should be renewed for all — including the highest earners, as Republicans want — according to an Associated Press-GfK Poll conducted just after last week’s elections. But 44 percent would continue the cuts only for those earning under $250,000 a year — which Obama favors — or let them lapse for everyone.
>
> **When it comes to the health care law Obama signed in March, 39 percent back the GOP effort to repeal it or scale it back. Fifty-eight percent would rather make more changes to the health care system or leave the law alone**.
> …
> In further evidence that last week’s decisive GOP win was not an embrace of Republicans, the poll indicated that the GOP is no better liked than the Democratic Party. Both got favorable ratings from about half in the survey.
