This is what I mean. So this lady did something reckless and dangerous?

And one more since I’m about to leave work:

[Homeowner holds gun on burglar](http://www.ksl.com/?sid=24585827)

From the article:

> "Despain said Martin “did a great job” and really helped police with the case. “We are incredibly grateful for this homeowner and what he did,” he said. “It was brave, and it was a great conclusion to what could potentially have been a very bad situation.”

Seems like if what the homeowner did was so reckless and dangerous, the police officer would have been warning others to NOT do it, instead of praising the homeowner for his actions.

I don’t think anyone’s claimed there’s a situation where it would be legal to shoot them but not to threaten them, just that in a situation where it would be legal to shoot them (in some states) you wouldn’t have the _opportunity_ to threaten them so it’s irrelevant.

What I’ve been unable to find is any recommendations from legal or weapons experts that one should threaten rather than shoot, and I’m still not clear why you think there would be times it’s legal to threaten to kill someone, but not legal to follow through on that threat.

I’d say that, at the very best, those two people were extremely lucky. Especially the second, where he demonstrated he wasn’t willing to shoot.

> **Cronauer:** Let’s try a very special situation. Wilkie, somethin’ special, okay? You go into a restaurant okay? A waitress comes up to you. You’re, eh-- You’re wearing your best new suit. She comes up, she spills soup all over you, looks at you like… “Eh, I’m sorry. What are you gonna do about it,asshole?”

Don’t you think that kind of hyperbole is unhelpful?
