You’re the bitch, Indygrrl. I can’t stand people who litter, or who think leaving their cigarette butts everywhere is not littering. And if you really did cuss that lady out (and litter) in front of your daughter, you’re even more of a bitch. And, it seems likely from your OP that you were probably smoking that cigarette while you were in the car with your daughter, which makes you even worse. If that is the case, it makes you a bad mother in my opinion. ---

Take a deep breath everyone… **Indygrrl** , field dressing your cig: pinch it where the filter and white paper meet, squeeze tightly and roll it back and forth. This will cause the hot ‘cherry’ to fall off. Then place the filter in your pocket or ??? or ashtray to dispose of properly. It is a simple thing that makes the world a nicer place to live. I’m one of those people who often rant about big SUVs. I don’t like the things, and i think that anyone who drives one when they don’t need to is a selfish wanker. But i also really get the shits with smokers who seem to think that cigarette butts, for some reason, do not constitute litter. Maybe it’s because each one is so small, but trust me, with the amount of them that get thrown away every day by inconsiderate smokers, they add up to quite a blight on certain parts of the landscape. Not to mention the morons who start fires when they throw their still-lit butts out the car window. Still, i think some people are being a little hard on **Indygrrl** here. While there is no excuse for her littering, she is right when she suggests that if we confronted strangers every time they did something that annoyed us, the world would be a pretty unpleasant place; it would also be more violent and dangerous than it already is. I think **DanielWithrow** ’s quote is particularly apposite, but it could just as easily be applied to the other woman as to **Indygrrl**. That woman should have examined her own behaviour before abusing a stranger about hers. I really get the shits when i see people litter, but usually my response is to pick up that litter and put it in the bin, thus allowing me to maintain a sort of self-righteous indignation 🙂 . Maybe i’m some sort of wimp for not confronting people, but some people are prone to react violently to such confrontation, and i have no desire to get beaten up, stabbed, or shot over an empty soda can. The most i have ever done is to pick up the piece of litter, chase after the person, and say “excuse me, i think you dropped this,” as if it were something important that they might need. I put a smile on my face, as if i’m being helpful, and they usually look embarrassed, thank me, and take back their rubbish. ---

Yeah, as someone who HATES seeing filthy cigarette butts on the ground, and HATES smelling cigarette smoke from people who think that just because they’re outside means the smoke disappears, I have little sympathy for you. True, it’s not polite to point out people’s rudeness to them, but despite her doing that, she’s in the right. Get an ashtray. Better yet, think of your child and quit smoking. Also, your clothes stink. ---

I was going to Bandelier National Monument one Saturday afternoon in the spring of 2000. Now, the whole area was in a severe drought, high fire hazard even in late April or early May. I wound up driving behind a guy who threw a cigarette butt out the window into the vegetation. Damn good way to start a fire under those conditions. One didn’t start, though. The next week or so, the Cerro Grande fire started and wound up taking out part of Los Alamos. ---

Especially considering the fact you set a very bad example for your child - in a few aspects: 1. Littering 2. Cursing 3. Losing your temper for no reason 4. Both assumptions are incorrect. Regardless, both polute, both use petrol, and both are not truly necessary in life. If you are so concerned, take a bus or some other mode of public transportation. Many diseases are spread via spittal. Ever considered this? Littering also just makes places look like crap. Would you like it if someone came and dumped their ashtray on your front lawn or driveway? I shall refrain from joing the name calling pile-on, but I would ask that you examine your actions and perhaps see how you could have dealt with things in a more decent manner.
