I wouldn’t “fear for your child”, or think you’re a crappy parent because of it. ---

I once nearly made a teenage boy get down on his knees and lick up the gobs he’d been spitting at the bus stop. Only when he apologised and started crying did I ease up on him. I said what I said in the context of if she does it on a regular basis. My how flippant and well, frankly, proud, of how she described her behavior, it appears as though she _does_ make a habit out of acting like that. I’ve met quite a few people who do act like that with small children and trust me, the kids aren’t the better for it. If the kid sees mommy freaking out on anyone who looks at her funny or mumbles something under their breath, then the kid’s going to grow up thinking that’s how you deal with people. Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to deduce that. Now, _s is if it’s a regular thing with her_thought that was obvious from my post, obviously it wasn’t. As a non-smoker, or just as a human being, I have observed that a lot of smokers seem to feel it is right or acceptable to dump butts everywhere. Many of these same people _wouldn’t_ however drop other bits of litter. It’s as if somehow, butts don’t count. I don’t know why this is. Ironically, cigarette butts are far more toxic to the environment than many other things one could drop. Certain litter dropped is biodegradable, like apple cores, or paper tissues (not that it should be dropped, IMO). Other things may not break down in a way that harms the environment, but may harm wildlife if they ingest it. Eg broken glass, or plastic bags. But cigarette butts fall into a category of items that (a) leach nasty toxins into the soil, (b) don’t biodegrade properly, © could be eaten by and harmful to animals. Cigarette butts are _extra_ bad. Not for any moral reason about smoking, or smokers’ rights, but just because they’re toxic. ---

Oh the humanity!😃 Holy shit! If I had known my posts would get this much attention/dissection in the Pit, I would have started posting in here months ago! I think some people might be taking this a little too personally. My rant was just a rant, nothing more. I was just getting it off my chest by bitching about it. I was having a bad day and the shit pissed me off. Yes, I sometimes cuss in front of my daughter. Terrible, I know, but I do it. I also smoke sometimes, sickening and horrible, I’m aware. If I’m exceptionally pissed off, I might make a rude comment to a stranger–not good, but it has happened. None of this happens on a daily basis, but I am a human with a short fuse, so it happens occasionally. I should try to improve, I know, but there are only so many hours in a day. I’m deeply, tragically, flawed–it is my cross to bear. Thank God I have you guys on the SDMB to point out the areas in which I could use improvement!😃 I’m going back to IMHO now. Whah. ---

You know what, Indygrrl? I don’t give a flying fuck if you kick puppies in your spare time, give nuns the finger, or sell crack in schoolyards. Your behavior and activities are your business. But if you come on a public message board with people of all different looks and shapes and talk about how she was a “fat assed bitch” and how you could have commented on her “fat ass” and you’re not going to win any friends. It’s immature of have an argument with a stranger in a parking lot. It’s **unbelievably** immature to think you can post comments about how she was a “fat assed bitch” to a group this large and expect sympathy. There are people here who are fat, skinny, short, tall, gay, transgendered, and have any number of physical characteristics about them that they prefer not to have used in a derogatory way. If you haven’t noticed by now that people frown on the use of terms like “fat assed” “faggot” and other 12 year old boy phrases as an insult, then your head is up your ass further then I thought. Her problem wasn’t with her ass size, it was with her choice to tell you what to do while herself doing something enviornmentally wrong. If that was the crux of your OP, I would have been behind you 100%. But it wasn’t. Or if it was, it didn’t read that way. You don’t have to justify your actions to the woman in the parking lot to anyone, IMHO. But grow up and learn how to express yourself without turning to schoolyard physical insults or don’t bother posting them here. ---

OK, I am going to do my very best to say this in a sensitive way and to avoid misunderstanding. That said, I am wearing my asbestos underpants, so here goes: Insofar as both addiction and obesity (i.e. smoking and the pronounced posterior in question) are issues that are both complex and nuanced, it could be argued that chastising folks for smoking inhabits the same realm of insensitivity as scolding them for being fat. My point? Not that one excuses the other, but that it is just not acceptable to accost strangers in public. We do all have our hot button issues, but really in a society that is as stressful and crowded as ours we need to all make an effort to get over them. You are not adding anything useful to the world by criticizing strangers for droping cigarette butts, being fat, wearing too much perfume, dropping gum, having visible exhaust coming out of their cars, the cars that they drive, not bathing enough, the way that the dress, spitting, or the many other things about our fellow humans that get on our nerves. I really am beginning to feel that the art of being polite and showing a little grace and decorum in public is lost. ---
