Am I missing something or is Zahi Hawass’s legal problem related to the bidding for a contract to operate a museum bookstore? If that’s the case, I really don’t see any connection between what he’s being criticized for and what he might go to jail for. ---

Things just keep getting worse for old Zahi. Confidential sources have leaked that Hawass is now also under investigation for running one of the largest and oldest fraudulent and unstustainable multilevel marketing scams in history. Ironically, he ran the whole thing out in the open the whole time, managing to sucker in some the smartest people on the planet in addition to many major governments. ---

Ok, here’s how it works… You start by retailing mummies. But the real money starts when you recruit other mummy salesmen. You get a cut of every mummy they sell. And then when _they_ recruit their own mummy salesmen, you get a cut of all those sales too… You’d think their mummies would have warned them about schemes like this. ---

That Egyptians resent that a lot of their historical treasures are not in Egypt but in Europe is understandable. But, the whole field of Egyptology was opened by Europeans. It wasnt a freaking Egyptian that managed to translate Egyptian writing into something everyone could understand. Besides, howewer proud Egyptians can feel about their history, they have crass knowledge of it. The case against Europe’s quasi looting of Egypt could be made, but not in the name of petty nationalism. It is a sad truth that the knowledge of Ancient Egypt we got is dominated by Westerners (mostly Euros), but nothing, absolutely nothing prevented Egypt from pionering the field. They didnt. ---

The person who used the [Rosetta Stone](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosetta_Stone) to figure out how to translate egyptian by cross referencing the greek was [Jean-Francoise Champollion](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean-Fran%C3%A7ois_Champollion). The main thing that the Egyptian government did for archeologists was some seriously restrictive dig regulations, which IIRC mainly included only being able to hire from certain families to work the digs [which is why having students come in and dig became so popular, they weren’t employees…so you could avoid paying outrageous ‘fees’ for people to basically haul dirt.] Hawass has continued in that vein by essentially shouldering out europeans from digging the ‘good’ sites, so they end up with marginal sites, and if something spiffy gets found, immediately the europeans and americans are shouldered out of their digs and replaced by egyptian archeologists. Big hint - how often do you see in headlines Zahi Hawass/some egyptian announce their discovery at \ and how often do you see an american or a european announcing a huge discovery? ---
