Hawass’ perspective is slanted and we know how much he loves the camera, but he’s not wrong to point out that a relationship between a protectorate or a dependent state and the protector is far from balanced and it’s fair to apply hindsight even if “the natives” officially approved at the time. That stuff does not only belong to Egyptians, but it doesn’t solely belong to everybody else because it’s “world history.” If you compare the amount of Egyptian treasures that don’t officially belong to Egypt and the amount of British or French or Italian treasures that don’t belong to Italy, I don’t think you’d find a similar ratio.

How else do account for how well Israel is portrayed in the media, the amount of coverage the supposed Holocaust gets and the continued employment of Seth Rogen.
If Israel receives any positive portrayals in the media it has more to do with them being an ally of the US than it does with any “control” Jews have within the establishment itself.

Are you saying that if the directors of the British museum (or whichever museum) investigates how they acquired something, decides it was not fair/reasonable/equitable, and returns, they will be wrong to do so?

I seem to remember the conquerors made up those rules themselves. Yes, that’s how the world worked for a long time and in many ways it still is. The conquered don’t have to like it, and it makes sense that Egypt’s top antiquities guy is trying to get Egyptian antiquities back in the country.
