Well, well, another tightass- you know: tightasses are like opinions - to many people have them.

Meathead:

First, self knowledge is a great thing (In case you miss the point I am referring to naming oneself “Meathead”)

2nd - I call Bullshit- I have only known of one situation where one person was direct/immediate supervisor over 50 people and that was unusual - supervising 90, I doubt it.

3rd - Saying “Creating animosity could be what you are after” You moron, there is no union in place, I ain’t there and guess what, they already have the animosity.

Fionn:

While you’re at it why don’t you move your momma overseas too.

Merijeek:

Now that you mention it - it is kinda hot.

Well of course if _you_ haven’t seen it happen then it can’t _possibly_ be true.

And note that **meathead** said that he had 90 people “working for him.” Not that he directly and immediately supervised 90 people. Boys and girls, can you say “department manager”? I knew that you could.

Another tightass.

Well, what we are talking about here Mr. Otto is a situation concerning a direct/immediate supervisor. Claiming to supervise 90 people when he manages 90 people is not being accurate.
(and he is doing so to substantiate his position)

And, I said I doubt it - if he in fact directly supervises 90 people; well I’m fucking impressed.

And, if you want to (you don’t have to): Bite me.

</div>

Time for me to jump in for my two cents, again. So I guess its fours cents. Does anyone have change for a dollar?

Now I should make a few things clean to those who only see black and white. We arent talking about 3 cents worth of drink. We are talking about, on average, 30 to 50 ounces of pop (which is more then a maximized drink) per employee, per day. Now with 20 or more people working a day you can do the math.
This is on top of the drink they have – for FREE – during their break.

Employee uniforms are the first thing someone is marked on when it comes to their evaluation. And having a name tag is part of their uniform. As a manager, and not only myself but all our managers, expect crew to remember something as simple as a name tag. Furthermore, we aren’t talking about one name tag, there are employees who have 9 or 10 of them simply because they can’t find the presence of mind to remember it.

I also want to address the fact that **county** has issues with me watching what my employees do while I am not around. Whether they are paid minimum wage or not, they sure as hell aren’t paid to write rude notes and stand around with their thumb up their ass. And besides, they havent shown me that they can work independantly and follow the rules without me around to push them.

I want it to be perfectly clear with you, **county** , that I am very good to my crew, and am not a tightass with them. The manager who trained me showed me that if you do your job, you do it right. And standing around talking is not doing it right. I don’t put them down, I dont treat them like dipshits. I give then positive feedback, and I fight for them whenever there is a problem. Before you say anything about me deserving this, try and do my job for a month. You’ll be welcomed to a world of starting 2 hours before the crew and staying 2 more hours after them which generally means finishing at 2 or 3 am. Try closing an entire restaurant by yourself becuase there isn’t anyone who can work that shift, so in the end you have worked a 14 hour shift and by the time you leave work it’s 5:30am. Next time you want to jump after someone for problems with their crew, just push yourself away from your desk, at your 9 to 5 job and go home to the wife and kids.

I would like to thank all the dopers who have said, “Theft is theft,” it doesnt matter what they steal its the principle that they **are** stealing.

Thanks to everyone for the great advice, I will use your ideas. Thanks.

**Amber**

Post the exact quote in which he made the claim that he supervises 90 people. Let me refresh your memory:

Don’t see nothin’ there that says he’s the direct/immediate supervisor of 90 people. Little tip for ya, doll, argue against what’s actually said, not what your fevered brain thinks it’s read.

Apparently “tightass” means “don’t let your workers steal shit and vandalize store property, and make them work instead of standing around.” Yup, sure are a lot of tightasses around. If I join your union, can I get paid to be a lazy asshole at home, because, you know, working is so oppressive.

The employee checking in again.

Call me a “tightass,” but I rather appreciate it when fellow-employees follow the rules. Maybe I’m just old-fashioned that way.

Also, **county** , in my opinion, you are talking as if it were the employees right to work at **Amber** ’s restaurant. It isn’t. And I know it’s not Wendy’s right to have the workers work there. It’s a mutual choice. Wendys chose to hire the folks, and they chose to work there. It’s an exchange. You give the company labor. In exchange, they give you money. That’s why there’s the whole “I can quit whenever I want to without reasons or reprecussions and you can fire me for the same” rule that I think is in a law book somewhere. If the employees choose to work at Wendys, they choose to be professional. Companies can’t just hire people and pay them to chit chat, vandalize, and be unsanitary.

I’m just amazed that in this job market people aren’t more afraid of losing their jobs over acting like assheads. If I was in Amber’s position, I would have fired Mr. Cashier that night - for his antics, and especially for refusing to clock out when told. And if he wouldn’t leave after having been fired, I would have called the police. Simple.

My personal philosphy of management has been: while it often does behoove a manager to be flexible and look for ways to bend the rules for good employees, a good manager must never allow the employees to decide what rules are to be bent, as well as when or to what extent. And those that have the rules bent for them must always know that this is an exception to reward good and responsible behaviour, not the norm.

I manage engineers and programmers now, and employ that philosophy with some (but not complete) success.

I remember well the fast food days of old, and how easy it was for a bad manager to result in discontent among the employees. It’s like a feedback loop - the employees act up, aren’t handled well, the manager gets resentful and angry, the employees feel badly and act up further…then new employees come in, and are faced with a rebellious staff and angry, bitter management. It’s a hard loop to break out of. Typically, the only way is to fire half of the staff, and the manager as well. But that sort of scorched-earth policy ends up making a lot of people unhappy.

I’ve also seen the rare case where the employees and managers almost unanimously respected each other, and worked together as a team with enormous flexibility and lattitude. Typically, it was because of especially bright and responsible employees, not stellar management, that did it. But that’s a small sample size.

UPDATE: Today, the store opened late because the only other person scheduled to open the store (other than **Amber** ) showed up an hour and a half late (he slept in), and there was a letter from the city saying that their garbage area out back had been inspected, they have rat and worm problems, and they will be receiving a fine in the mail. If it is not cleaned up to spec by tomorrow, they will receive an additional fine.

Taking out the garbage is the sole responsibility of the employees. It is practically the only thing that managers aren’t instructed to supervise. And they can’t even do _that_ properly.

Either you read it wrong and made a mistake or you read it right and distorted what was said to make a point. Either way, you were in the wrong. Additionally, your entire response to this thread has been that of someone spoiling for a fight. Not interested in fighting with you; as the old saying goes I don’t gt into battles of wits with the unarmed.
