Portly? Hardly. I’ve seen this kind of behavior before and find it totally believable. The offender was sure he could intimidate and frighten the older white guy until he saw the jacket. It wasn’t fear…it was doubt. That’s the kind of courage you find in those kind of assholes too often. Once he saw the jacket he was no longer sure of the outcome of a confrontation and that’s what gave him pause. Bully’s like that prefer a sure thing. ---

I know it sounds like some kind of sad resignation, but I just avoid going to see movies at times where there’s a reasonable chance of having people like that at the movie. If I’m going to see a big, popular flick, I’ll try to do it at a matinee, or hopefully it’s playing at a theater where I don’t expect to see that kind of crowd. Even if he stopped after the manager asked him to. … you’re distracted for a while, and you need to leave to go get the manager, and it’s on your mind the rest of the movie. It completely ruins the movie-going experience. ---

I don’t know if you’re a trained anthropologist (I’m certainly not), but it’s my understanding that when one enters an unfamiliar social environment, inappropriate behavior would include things like talking trash to the locals, while appropriate behavior would include looking around and learning about what the place is like before assuming that one has the privilege of using the more informal modes of address and inquiry with strangers. Just because this is the Pit, it doesn’t mean that there is no etiquette at all. We are a real community, not the saloon at Oakwood Estates, with denizens sent over from Central Casting. ---

[/QUOTE] The home-movie watching experience is definitely leaps above what it used to be. But, don’t get me wrong. . .I love going to the movies. I like theaters. I like seeing films with good crowds. But, I CAN’T stand seeing movies with inconsiderate crowds, so I just pick my time/movie/theater so that I can be reasonably sure to avoid a shitty crowd. That means, for instance, not seeing \*Oceans 13 \*on opening weekend at a multiplex where I would figure the OP’s experience is more the rule than the exception. Fortunately, Baltimore has 3 well-run independent theaters, so I do have more choice than a lot of other folks. ---

Agree with **Trunk**. While movies at home are great (what’s not to love about a 13" screen?), there’s no replacing the movie theatre experience. The popcorn smell alone makes it worth it. And where else can you spend $14 on $2 worth of snacks? But I too try to pick movies and times where I’m unlikely to encounter jerks. The last time I was blinded by a cell phone was during the hightly popular and teen-oriented… …An Inconvenient Truth.
