If so, that’s another point to add to the sign you’re going to need on your trash can: “DO NOT DEPOSIT DOG WASTE IN THIS BIN; VIOLATORS MAY BE FINED UP TO $\*\*\* (CITY ORDINANCE XXX.XX.X.XXXX). YOU ARE UNDER SURVEILLANCE.” Secure copies of this notice to the front and sides of your trash can, up near the top edge where shit-leavers are likely to look as they reach out to open it. If you want to further creep them out, mount a camera (real or fake) near your garage, pointed toward the area where the trash can sits. ---

Glad to live in the middle of nowhere - my dog’s can shit (almost) wherever they want without me worrying about the need to pick it up and they know themselves not to shit in the driveway. However, some idiots dog is reliving himself almost on a daily basis in front of my shop in town and I have to clean this up everytime - If I ever catch that asshole dog owner, s/he will eat that poop! ---

If I return to my parked car to find a bag of poop sitting on the hood am I duty bound to dispose of it properly? I would simply knock it onto the ground with a stick and drive away. I don’t consider myself obligated to pick up after other people, especially their dog poop. I would defend the rights of a homeowner to do the same thing with an empty trash barrel. Dump the poop out and bring the barrel inside. Why does someone else’s littering put a responsibility on them to pick it up? [I wouldn’t do that myself, since I’d rather not have a bag of poop in front of my house, but I can see someone making that call differently.] ---

If you throw it into a private garbage can that is later picked up and it all goes into the trash truck I would say you are right. That’s not littering. If you threw it into my trash barrel you absolutely would be littering, since I don’t have trash pick up. I need to take the bags out of the barrel and put them in my car to drive to the dump. You putting random loose trash in there of any kind inconveniences me as much as if you left it on my driveway or on my kitchen counter. More, actually. There are other examples but you get the gist. This notion that any trash container, even a private one, is a safe place for anyone to throw their poop bags into is incorrect. For all you know it could be a rainwater storage container or birdseed or other container that shouldn’t have poop in it ever. ---

From my point of view, litter only happens once. Whoever put it “out in the wild” which is anywhere it isn’t supposed to be is the litterer. After that it’s just moving it around. If I pick up your litter and move it to the other side of the street that doesn’t make me a litterer. Literally. ---

Pointless and tangentally related anecdote: I was walking my dog past the grounds of a church near my house. She had already pooped and I’d already picked it up. A few steps later, she squatted to pee. Random dude pulls out of church parking lot in a pickup truck and slows down to shout at me: I HOPE YOU’RE GOING TO PICK THAT UP! I wave the baggie of dog poop at him and shouted back, “WHY? YOU WANT IT?” 😃 Note to dog haters: Girl dogs squat to pee. Do not assume that all squatting dogs are pooping in your precious, pristine grass. ---
