Fucking MTA

What is the cost of a fare in NYC?

It was about $2 one way last I went. When will the fare hike be implemented? I’m travelling there this week and I was hoping on using their transist system (I’m staying in Queens, I want to see Manhattan).

MTA does have more reasonable weekly and monthly fares (well, more or less). I’m not sure how bad they will be now.

I dunno if I’d call it THAT much of a bargain with the monthly pass. If you work 50 weeks a year and take the subway twice a work-day you use 83 dollars a month. But if you buy cards for 7 dollars a pop or more you get a 15 percent bonus. So in that case it’d be 72 dollars a month for using a normal pay-per-ride metrocard. So if you take the train twice a week on week-days and then use the train four times extra, then you’ve broken even. The monthly card is only a slight bargain over using the prepaids if you happen to take more than 45 trips a month then you’re better off with a monthly, otherwise get a pre-paid. But being a student and having a part-time job I’m no-where near that amount. Even when I worked full-time I don’t know that I’d necessarily go out both nights every weekend, and you don’t always leave the neighborhood.

Point is that the monthly card requires a lot of use to really save money. For most it’s only just a little bit. I know a few people who are on a monthly card who I suspect are wasting money

Still $2 the fare hike starts in June.

This really sucks. It will affect me a lot. I shell out close to $300 already on rail fare each month.

I feel sorrier for the truly poor, though.

I knew this would not be a good thing when the New York article quoted the MTA spokesman as saying the changes would be ‘‘draconian.’’
