Why do we pretend that Saudi Arabia isn’t the worst country in the world? Sure, there are some poor countries in Africa and Asia that are pretty bad, but they don’t have the resources that Saudi Arabia does. There really is no excuse to be such a moral sewer when you have the potential they do. [Latest](http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/43960853/ns/world_news-mideast_n_africa/): shopkeepers resist hiring women to sell lingerie to other women. You can’t vote, drive a car, or travel without a man’s permission (for a widow that might be her own son). If you are raped you could be stoned for adultery, and as a final act of indignity you have to buy your undies from a man. We should deny all student and travel visas and cut business ties until they decide to join the 19th century, never mind the 21st. ---

I find this hysterical… looks like the regulation requires ALL male clerks of lingerie stores to be replaced by female. So women can’t vote, can’t drive a car, might get stoned for adultery… but it’s against the law for men to work in lingerie stores, so it’s almost equal. Other than the fact the law is apparently not being enforced, having been enacted in 2004… ---

I agree with the OP. Saudi Arabia is one fucked-up place. I’d rather go to Somalia or Afghanistan before Saudi Arabia. (Well, maybe if I could dress up like a man I wouldn’t.) My perception of the place come from the book “Princess: A true story of life behind the veil in Saudi Arabia.” Yes, I know. Don’t believe everything you read. But even if only a fraction of the things in that account are true, I still don’t want to go there. ---

why do you need personal contact with anybody at all to buy lingerie? Let’s say why can’t the employee be behind a wall, giving you products to play with through a “baby hatch” type of contraption? ---

The Saudis get away with behaving like animals because they have oil, obviously. I hope I live long enough to see it run out, so their country can return to being the absolute shithole it was before the internal cumbustion engine came along. ---
