Latest poll has McCain drawing even. I just know OBama is going to lose. He’s just not the type of guy fly over-boy wants to have a beer with. The Dems are going to have to learn to treat the red-staters like the morons they are so they don’t feel patronized. ---

[/QUOTE] Sad to say, but it’s probably true, if things keep going the way they’re going (e.g. absent a dreadful faux pas.) [Electoral-vote.com](http://Electoral-vote.com) has Obama winning, but even a cursory examination of the key states shows McCain will win. You have to knock 2 to 4 percent off Obama’s vote total for his being a muslim black guy\*; the racist vote will be heard, like it or not. - - Yes, I know he’s not a Muslim. Millions think he is. ---

Great start there, **Dan** , on appealing to “red state” voters! I’d say 2012 is in the bag. Your despair about '08 makes about as much sense as the irrational predictions of an Obama landslide we heard here not too long ago. ---

I disagree with the beer thing. I’ll be very interested if this whole “elitist” thing catches on. As far as the “who’d I rather have a beer with,” I’d bet that more Americans would rather play basketball with Obama than hear endless, meandering stories from Old Man McCain. ---

Ehn. Obama’s up 3 points again. McCain seems to have a hard ceiling just below 45% of voters. McCain fluctuates between 40 and 44% while Obama is between 45% and 49%. It’s been that way pretty consistently for a long while. The real campain’s barely begun. ---

I’m trying to be optimistic. I really like Obama but I’m not a big fan of one party controlling the White House and Congress so I won’t be crushed if he loses. Plus, McCain isn’t _that_ bad, considering our current president. I got physically ill when Bush was re-elected. Worse than McCain winning would be Obama - with or without fault of his own - having a lackluster one-term presidency, IMO. And it could easily happen without fault of his own if housing and energy stays wacky and we get attacked again. That could lead to a resurgence of Republican domination. So, yeah, I want Obama to win, but I think we’ll all be ok if he doesn’t, and they might even run him again in 2012 when conditions are better for him to have an effective, 2-term presidency. ---

Asshole attitudes like this are WHY those states are Red. Those fly-over voters want someone who gives a shit about them - and it is obvious from this that you do not. I hope the Democrats are not completely ruled by people of your type. Obama has stumbled a bit on talking to those voters, but I think that his semi-populist message might resonate well with them as the campaign continues. ---

While I agree that painting vast swathes of the country with a broad brush is absurd, responding with something akin to a Limbaugh quote does the defense a great disservice and, in many ways, supports the point you’re trying to counter. Of course, I may have been whooshed and missed the sarcasm, but “raving socialist”? “Teh Libs”? I’m sorry if I’m missing a nuance or something, but these are such vapid, empty, parrot-like inanities that using them to defend the south kind of silly. ---

I wouldn’t be worried at this point even if mccain was about 5 points up. People just aren’t excited about him at all, i find the “likely voter” measurements very flawed. Hes this elections Kerry, not Obama. ---
