Full Kitchen Redo

So the exhaust fan over the stove is not working correctly. The contractor will be back out Wednesday to attempt to troubleshoot. So far everything else is great.

I’m going to throw this here as it kind of is the finishing touch to the Kitchen Redo and dying tree removal …

Gazebo kit arrived yesterday and despite awful instructions and poor labeling, I have assembled it in about 4.5 hours; spread out over two days. It is a 10’x12’ gazebo, with framed supports which are generally more durable than single pole supports and far easier to repair if needed.

BTW: $339.08 and free shipping from Wayfair. Came Fedex Ground in 8 days from Arizona I believe.

That looks nice. It fits your space really well!

Just a heads up, I think I will have to start a similar thread of my own. We are in the planning stages of a (nearly) full kitchen remodel, scheduled for next year. It’s already not as fun as I thought it would be…just so many choices to make and every time I think, “Really? You know this is the only kitchen you’ll have FOREVER…”
Anyway! A couple of pictures here to show what we’re dealing with. Our plan is to keep the flooring and appliances. Cabinets, countertops, backsplash tile all new. Plus some demolition of the soffits and a weird wall on the other side I don’t have a picture of.

Wish us luck!

I want to get rid of my kitchen floor, but i love my cabinets, so i guess I’m not going to do it.

We don’t like our floor either, but it’s throughout most of the house so I guess we’re stuck with it. I’ll clean it real good someday when we have fewer dogs.

We replaced our kitchen floor about 15 years ago and kept our original cabinets. A friend of a friend was a professional. We paid him, but he did it for cheap since it was a favor to a friend. He needed a helper, so I volunteered just to see how it was done. I learned a lot.

Unless it’s a clash of styles or colors or whatever, there’s no reason you can’t replace floors and leave the existing cabinets.

Good luck, It isn’t fun, but the results are awesome. Over 3 months and I’m still impressed by how much better the new kitchen is than the old. 4 of us were working on meal recently and we weren’t getting in each other’s way.

I see you have in the current kitchen the style of handles I dislike a lot.
Not aesthetics, but I find ways to get belt loops or pockets caught on the extended part of that handle type. Something to think about in the replacement.

Were you going lower cabinets with classic closet style doors or thinking about almost all drawer units like we did? I love the drawers, slightly less storage but much easier to use and much easier to access.

This is a good time to free up some counterspace by getting either the over the stove microwave or the under the counter style.

No clash of colors that couldn’t be fixed with a coat of paint. But i asked about removing a tile floor in another thread, and i think it’s pretty risky.

I hate modern drawers. Half the volume is taken by hardware. That being said, drawers are great for access to your stuff. If you have enough storage space to throw away half of it, definitely go drawers.

(And bigger drawers waste less space than smaller ones. I’m still a little pissy about a drawer in the newly-redone bathroom that holds about ⅓ the volume of an old pull-drawer in my bedside table that has the same exterior dimensions.)

Very true!
We’re going to have a mixture of drawers and cabinets. This is actually a very large kitchen (I only have these few pictures so far). On the other side, next to the fridge, is a long countertop/bar area, and we’re going to do the undercounter microwave there.
Colorwise, we’re doing black lower cabinets and white uppers. Also, removing all the uppers except the ones next to the sink. On the stove wall, it’ll be tiled to the ceiling. Very modern.
I can say with certainty that I’ve seen every type of backsplash tile currently manufactured, but haven’t been able to make any decision.

I was unsure about the undercounter “drawer” microwave. After a year of use, I can say we love it.

Oh good! Because I am also unsure. But I realized that all we ever use it for is minor stuff like popcorn or reheating coffee anyway.
