Fun in Tucson

Good vegetarian buffet:

Govinda’s. Hare-Krishna run restaurant, with amazingly good food. We spent Christmas Eve there this year. Yummy. Tuesdays are Indian food night.

Most restaurants around downtown are very accommodating to vegetarians, I’ve found. Most restaurants in the city, come to think of it.

Can’t find a web site for Govinda’s, but it’s at 711 E. Blacklidge Drive, at northwest corner of Blacklidge and First.

Hi, MrVisible, thanks for the info about Govinda. I looked up some reviews online and it sounds like it’s worth a visit. It would be a real change of pace for me to eat buffet style and know that NOTHING contains meat. What fun! I don’t think we’ll be in Tucson on a Tuesday night, so India Night is out, which is too bad.

The Casbah Tearoom looks interesting as well? Any opinions?

Thanks again!

If you really want to get adventurous, try Zemam’s on Broadway and Tucson Blvd. They serve Ethiopian food, and the platters they serve all of the dishes on are edible (some kind of bread, I don’t quite know). You might want to call ahead and make reservations, as it gets very busy on most nights.

Govinda’s is good, but more off campus than The Casbah (which is also great). Probably the only other one worth checking out is The Oasis, which is downtown on Stone. The owner of The Oasis is a man named “Fluff,” who used to order a pizza from us and request that we cut it with a clean roller so as not to get any traces of Pepperoni on it (not that Pepperoni can be considered meat  )

Agree with the Sabino Canyon comments. Thought of one other thing, if you’re all up to a slighly more serious hike.

In the Northeast of town is the Loews Ventana Canyon hotel (very expensive, but a lovely place to stop for a drink). As you approach the hotel, on the left, is a not very well marked parking area for hikers. Park here and hike.

There’s basically one trail, and it goes up (and up) Ventana Canyon. Bring water and lunch. Views are spectacular, and you won’t see many other people. Try to reach “the pools”, which are a set of ponds at the top of a waterfall. Considerably further is “La Ventana” (the window) itself, basically an arch that looks like a window in the rock.

(I don’t know about the window, never made it that far.) Again, this is a serious hike, but very cool.
