# Functional Dyspepsia(sp??)

Hey folks,
I have a question that I’m hoping someone may have an answer for.
It concerns the medical problem called
Functional Dyspepsia.
Someone very dear to me has the problem, and to this point, none of the doctor or specialist she has seen have been able to do anything about it. Yes, this even includes the specialists at the mayo clinic.
If I’m not mistaken, this disorder slowly erodes the stomach lining, leaving nerves and such open to the brutal onslaught of stomach acids.
What I’d like to find out is if maybe anyone else has this problem, and if so, what have you been told about it, and also have advances been made to combat it?
Any helps would put me forever in your debt.

we’ve actually checked most of the search engines we could find, as well as keeping up to date on the mayo clinic web site, but maybe there could be something new, so I’m certainly gonna check!

Don’t worry Mr T, i’ve done the search for you (I used [www.altavista.com,](http://www.altavista.com,) it tends to be superior to the other search engines i’ve used, yahoo is crap and throws only commercial junk at you. Yes I realise it’s a business).

What is a Functional Gastrointestinal Disorder?
Functional gastrointestinal (GI) disorders can affect any part of the GI
tract, including the esophagus, stomach, and intestines. They are
disorders of function (how the GI tract works), not structural or
biochemical abnormalities. As a result, xrays, blood tests, and
endoscopies can have essentially normal results.
Importantly, they are not psychiatric disorders, although stress and
psychological difficulties can make the functional GI symptoms worse.
The most common disorders are Irritable Bowel Syndrome (altered bowel
consistency combined with abdominal pain that is usually relieved with a
bowel movement) and Functional Dyspepsia (ulcer-like symptoms -
upper abdominal pain, feeling of indigestion).
Approximately 25 million Americans have functional GI disorders. 50 -
80% of them do not consult physicians, although they may take
over-the-counter medications and report significantly more job
absenteeism and disability.

Thanks for the info everyone,
As to what exactly the disorder did, I may be wrong, those were the laymans terms used by the mayo clinic folk when my gf spent $10 000 to go down there for a week. And well, I’m no doctor, so I really am quite clueless as to EXACTLY what it is and what it does, although the info helps much. All I do know is that my girl is in constant pain from it, and I wanna do everything I can to try and find something to help.
