Funky Winkerbean 10/4/2007--Lisa's Dead

Christ, today he is on a shrink’s couch talking about the aftermath years later. He’s been tortured for years in a single day’s strip.

BTW, who or what is Funky Winkerbean?

Detroit slang for “gonorrhea.”

I thought that was clappy winkerbean.

  • Funky Winkerbean* is both a what (comic strip) and who (title character of said strip). He began as a high school student and remained that way for years, in the “frozen in time” format typical of most strips. Then creator Tom Batiuk decided to age the cast. Funky is now the manager of the pizza shop where he hung out during his teen years. This page (which features two rotating pictures) will introduce you to Funky (fifth from the left, standing and wearing an apron, in the back row of the “Montoni’s” scene) and his cohorts. Right now, Lisa Moore is still depicted, but that may soon change to reflect the new reality signaled by her Thursday death and Les’s overnight aging by ten years in Friday’s installment.

Incidentally, one of my nephews attended the school at which Tom occasionally taught even after becoming a successful cartoonist. Batiuk felt that periodically immersing himself in the teenage milieu was one way to keep himself, and thus his strips (he also created John Darling and Crankshaft), “real”.

Thanks, Sternvogel.

Here’s an updated view of the characters. Looks like Les has gotten himself a second wife and a stepdaughter.

I don’t think so. I think the overweight blond is Crazy’s wife and the teenaged girl with the baseball cap is hers and Crazy’s.
