Funky Winkerbean Kills Again!

On the Comics Curmudgeon site, Josh is almost obsessed with The Darkness That Is Winkerbean. That’s how I was able to cringe more and more with each strip. Even better are the readers’ comments.

He’ll help you laugh and snark at Mary Worth, Rex Morgan, too… and even the Family Circus.

As a local/personal note, there is a Westview, Ohio. Bakula graduated from Midview High School near Grafton, Ohio where I spent a lot of time on my grandfather’s farm. It is not far from Elyria High School where Scott taught while beginning the comic. Life at Midview is considered the inspiration for Westview High in the comic. Scott did not want to use an actual school name in the comic so he chose Westview, an unincorporated area a few miles to the northeast. It does not have a high school by that name.

The name Westview actually came from my family back in the mid 1800s when the railroad first came through the Olmsted Falls area. The train stop on Sprague Rd was the original location for Westview and it then grew to include the general area.

It is not an incorporated area but is still used all the time around here. My family from the 1800s is buried in Westview Cemetery.

I was in a weird public high school just south of Cleveland during the 70s where being in the band WAS for cool kids.

A lot of us were able to blow jazz and DID publicly, we all smoked reefers, read the Beats, and dressed hep (NOT 70s style). The band (and drill team) girls were incredibly hot, and we got first pick, due to close association. Except for me…my main squeeze was the head of the football cheer squad. And I played the freakin’ Sousaphone.

But I could lay down some funky bass lines.
