He did one which had a gag that took me ages to spot: Centre stage is a spotty youth holding an Oriental-style lamp from which billowing smoke condenses into the top half of a turbanned djinni. The djinni has a “_Now_ what are you complaining about?” expression on his face, and his arms folded to indicate that he’s done. To one side is a Triumph Herald - a 1960s car that was deeply naff by the 1980s, and the youth is saying, “No, no, I meant a [Triumph](http://www.triumphmotorcycles.co.uk/motorcycles/range/classics/bonneville).” So far so plain and easy to understand. But it took me a day or so to grasp why the youth was sitting on a cabin trunk covered with fur while a four-foot rooster was strutting unconcernedly downstage right. Clearly, his three wishes were “A hairy chest, a great big cock, and a Triumph” ---

I looked at several of those but they were all multi-panel. ---

I’ve looked for it online, but can’t find it. It was a Pat Oliphant cartoon from the Nixon administration. President Nixon is kneeling on top of a very large crate, labeled “Inflation”. He is desperately hammering nails into the top, with more nails held in his mouth. The crate contains a very large creature, which has clearly just stood up, ripping the crate away from the bottom. All you see of the creature are four very hairy legs with large claws; the rest is obscured by the crate. In the corner of the cartoon, a guy is yelling “More Nails!” at Oliphant’s little bird character, who is racing off to fetch them. The cartoon is a commentary on the intractability of the '70s-era inflation problem. What makes it outstanding in at least my memory is the “Oh, Crap” expression on Nixon’s face.
