I knew a guy with a cat named Quat. The whole concept was that he could yell out, “Come, Quat”. Yeah. ---

We had a cat named Evvie when I was a kid. She was a loud purrer, so my mother named her after the outboard motor (Evinrude). She could open our kitchen awning window to go in or out. It was a log house, so to get in, she would climb up the side of the house, grab the bottom of the wooden frame, jerk the window open and dart inside before it could slam shut on her tail. Clever cat. ---

A cat named Lips. His original name was Forklift. He was a crazy cat and the kids in the apartment building we lived in thought his name was Forklips. So we started calling him Lips for short, and it became his name because Forklift is such a silly name. Also had a female dog named Dude. And as I always mention in these threads, when you name your pet just remember that you’ll be going around the neighborhood shouting that name someday. ---

We have a small black & white cat that we got from the RSPCA as a kitten. Apparently he was found living in a local dairy and because his colouring and pattern are similar to a Holstein Friesian cow his name is ‘Moo’ ---

We have a cat we couldn’t think of a name for, for so long, she started to answer to “New cat.” I said "We’re going to have to think of a name that sounds like “New cat,” so my husband nicknamed her Nougat. According to her official vet records, her name is Lillian, but she gets called “Nougat” all the time. Most of our animals get people names, though, because I think it’s funny when animals have mundane human names. We had a cat named “Debbie” once, because she showed up on our doorstep, and shot into the house when my husband opened it (she was crying, and he thought maybe one of our cats had gotten out), and that was pretty much it: she lived with us now. It happened at the time we were playing music, and Debbie Harry’s “I Want You” was the song that was on. Not to mention she was a long-haired cat. It was bshert. We’ve had a Dennis, a Lucy, an Irene, a Joey, a Madeleine, a Hope, a Simon, and various other ordinary names. They amuse me. ---

I had a female dog named George. Why? My cousins had a female dog named Henry and I figured that would outdo them. Also, the TV show Bewitched was popular then and had a female character named Sam. Somewhere in the world there needs to be a cat named Fido. ---

When the Maine Coon was a tiny kitten, he would attach himself to my ankle with four paws worth of tiny hooked claws. Then he would work his way upward, hooking and releasing, hooking and releasing, until he was attached firmly atop my shoulder. Of course, I called him Velcro. Velcro was a really special cat. He was my friend and companion for twenty years. Since his passing four years ago, I haven’t been comfortable looking for an equivalent replacement cat. And I’d be stuck for an equivalently appropriate name! 🙂 ---

When I was a kid my parents had friends who had a cat named “Cookin’ fat”. They would never explain the name in front of us children. We eventually worked it out. ---

we had a border collie/Samoyed mix called Dollar, named by my daughter who had recently become aware of money. The cat who adopted us soon after was named Nickel. Two of the best pets ever! My last cat was Mr. Underfoot, named from the Heinlein novel Friday. I adopted him sight unseen from a young woman in an abusive living situation. He came out of the carrier, sniffed around for a few minutes, and flopped in the middle of the living room. The name was a no-brainer. ---

Had an all white sheep, except for the tip of his tail which was brown. Dipstick. Dippy for short. The future food sheep were either Sausage or Rump Roast. The stray cat that showed up right before every snowstorm was named, no surprise, Stray Cat. ---
